In the closet republicans are comical. Ask any intelligent person, and they can pick them up on the gaydar from miles away. Even the way they talk about the military screams gay sexual frustration.

"mental health professionals should not tell gay clients they can become straight through therapy or other treatments" They weren't the ones saying it. It is religious groups who hate gays who tell them they must pray until they aren't gay It is 'christian counselor' that tell them these things along with telling battered women they must stay with their husbands and pray.

APA has indicated for a long time that therapies, etc. didn't work. I'm glad they have finally gotten emphatic about it. Think it will change anything? NARTH will still disagree.

Right, and they're telling their "Christian counselors" who happen to be licensed mental health pros to knock it off. Or to stop pretending that they are maybe.

This article says that the research has been going on since 1960. I was born in '61. And as for myself and SOOO many others I've known in my day, orientation is something that you are BORN WITH. As easy to chang as your skin color, or where your different organs are positioned in your body. I've also seen how these "therapies" have caused more harm than good. I've had to talk many a friend down off a ledge, not just because of religious belief conflict, but society bigotry in general! with the way the world is in such turmoil with the many wars going on, couldn't we just try to let folks be who they are and what they believe. As long as they don't get into my face about it, live n' let live, I say.

I went to Ex-Gay therapy when I was 15. My parents pushed me to and I can say that IT DOES NOT WORK!, IT'S A SCAM!... When I finished the therapy I realized that Sexual Orientation is something hardwired within the human that can't be changed. No Straight can become Gay, no Gay can become straight.

As long as they don't get into my face about it, live n' let live, I say. I think you are reading something that is NOT there. From what I'm reading this has more to do with gay clients in therapy struggling with the guilt of being gay due to the pressures of their religion. That's contextually different from saying the APA is claiming sexual orientation is something you're born with. It sounds more like they're saying reparative therapy isn't effective. There are many therapies that have been regarded ineffective. It does not necessarily mean the psychological condition cannot be treated, it simply means the current methods are effective. The elephant in the room on this issue is that the APA is having a conversation about homosexuality which means homosexuality is regarded by the profession as a "human behavior". The foundation of the discipline states that all human behavior is learned. Homosexuality is a learned human behavior, we simply don't know how to unlearn it...yet

I know people who used to be homosexual but are now hapily heterosexual and have been for many years. I guess I will have to break the bad news to them that the therapy they think worked for them doesn't actually work and that they will have to go back to being homosexual again. Any ideas on how to convey the bad news to them?

Yarhouse and a colleague, Professor Stanton Jones of Wheaton College, will be releasing findings at the APA meeting Friday from their six-year study of people who went through Exodus programs. More than half of 61 subjects either converted to heterosexuality or "disidentified" with homosexuality while embracing chastity, their study said.

WTF wrote: <quoted text> So if they can't find a 'gay gene' you think it is okay to beat them over the head with a book and drive them bacl into the closet, or suicide? If it is a sin, so be it. It is their sin not yours, and as long as they harm no one else and it is consenting adults it is none of your business. They should have the free choice and option to undergo therapy if that is what they want to do. This decision serves to prevent people from making a free choice. How is that right?

I have known people who experimented with same sex relationships who were not gay but someone who is more attracted to the same sex is not going to change though they sometimes try to conform to social pressure. Time to stop the brainwashing and allow people to be themselves and find happiness.

Preaching that to not go to hell you must live your life in this world celebate. Let's say that this holy document told you that sex was a sin and heterosexuals should be celebate. Oh yeah...that's right. Paul did say that but said if you were weak it was better to marry then to burn in hell. Marriage was for the one's too weak to be celebate. But gee marriage isn't an option for gays. The religious sure pick and choose among their Bible verses. Jesus didn't judge anyone not even the prostitute. Worry about your own sex life and your own soul.
