Atom-Smasher Gears Up to Find 'God Particle'

In a vast circular underground tunnel below the French-Swiss border, the final pieces of a gigantic machine are being set in place for an extraordinary investigation into the infinitely small at CERN.

People tend to get weirded out by this term so I will clarify it. It's no surprise that journalists continue to use it, mostly because it gets attention, but it upsets people so generally they should stop.

Lederman was making a Tower of Babel joke about Higgs boson and this was neither meant to imply an actual God or a god of all particles. He said he always called it "the god-d**ned particle" because of its difficulty but his published wouldn't let him use that term instead.

Our evolutionary and collective understanding of The Big Bang will lead up to the point were we create one. Then it becomes a do-over. The last being to generate a big bang becomes god.

The USA had, and squandered, the opportunity to do this years ago. Anyone remember the Super Conducting Super Collider project? It's cancellation by the politicians was probably one of the most shortsided decisions ever made. Not only would all the things mentioned here be already discovered, but also work would be under way to make nuclear fusion a reality. Can you say inexhaustible, non-polluting (no radioactive waste, no by products, etc.) source of energy? When the project was cancelled, the 53 mile diameter underground tunnel had been dug around the city of Waxahatchie TX, most of the above ground facilities were complete, all of the special equipment had been ordered (much of it already delivered), and a host of scientists from all over the world were either hired or commited to the project. Its demise not only cost millions in mothballing expenses, but threw the scientific community into disarry for years due to suddenly dislocated talent and projects that had to be susupended in mid-stride. It's a shame it had to be funded by the government. Politicians are far to near-sighted and self serving to make effective decisions on far reaching matters like this.

Probably because your MIP [military-industrial-pharmaceu tical] complex led by AMA, Halliburton, et al., couldn't get a piece of the action -- besides it might have disproved intelligent design in physics, kind of like Rife's work in plasma waves

God knows why it was aborted. But even if we discovered we had the ability to perform fusion, it is extremely short sighted to think that would make us Gods. When we figure out how to make matter out of nothing, not just banging it after it is already in existence, which is what the big bang is,(matter had to already be there for it to bang itself), then we can start to disprove God. And don't forget we would also have to figure out how to actually create life from scratch, not cloning from an existing biosource. And we would have to figure out how to rationalize a universe that was either always here or "created", infinite or contained, not to mention the definition of "here", a place for the universe to exist as defined by what would be here if you took it all away (what was here before the universe, what is the universe expanding into?). We are far from Gods. Gods do not die. I'm glad I don't have to stay mortal forever. Death gives us a good break from it. Then life gives a good break from death. Maybe. That's another thing, we don't know what death is exactly, so we are way far from being Gods. We don't know what life is exactly and we are in the middle of it! Some of you I'm sure think you know something about it. We're conscious, yea that explains a lot, we're human, yea that explains even less.

I remember it well, and I am all for science funding, but your recall of its history is suspect. It was way, way, way over budget with no idea what benefit it could have and no end in sight. Saying that the SSC would somehow magically be ahead of the LHC, or even the ILC which is still on the drawing board, in what it would have accomplished is not borne out by fact or the specs of the machines themselves.

Greedy universities killed the SSC, not Democrats (and certainly not Republicans, who might have liked for Clinton to continue to fund a bottomless pit) and it might not be online even now if it had continued.

It's better to let Europe take a bath on things like the LHC and we can fund a small part of it and use it just like we would have used the SSC. We can all list bad ways to spend money and this would have been one of them.

There would be radioactive waste; there would be by-products of the nuclear fusion. Remember also the 14 MeV neutrons of the D-T reaction.

It's interesting how the passage of time tends to shroud things you don't want to remember. I had forgotten about the budget issue. If I recall correctly, that's what put the project under the scrutiny of the Congress. Additionally, I am an engineer, but not enough of a scientist to evaluate the merits of the machinery. So if the horribly over budget project was also not going to work well, then perhaps the right decision was made after all. But you have to question whether the whole thing was managed properly. Greed, inadequate equipment, and way over budget all make it sound like whomever was in charge was inadequate to the task.

That's nice. I suppose this is going to improve modern machines. But, I still believe the best way to find God is through Dharma and Yoga.

god is an inner-personal reality there is no god as men express god to others , god created god or creation created itself to never be explained as to when or were or how, your civilization is a mockery of creations true plan ,positions and titles have been mis-appropreated for centuries and the true fate and destiny of millions has been cast astray, religion was not called religion as its book concepts of today are mis-taught as the great ones of those days were men and women of knowledge wizdom and understanding religion was created by those who wished to break in on what is known now as fame and make a fame for themselves ,life is away of life each one of us has witnessed creations attributal parabals and either strays from rightiuosness or embracess rightiuosness
