Not only environmental considerations, but we have no viable long term energy policy. Our political system only rewards short term solutions, 2-4 years considering the next election cycle.

If we do not plan ahead, we will fall behind the rest of the world that is considering the long range consequences. Brazil is an example of long range planning. The government implemented a move to ethanol production through fermentation of sugar cane. They obtain a large amount of their transportation fuel from ethanol. That along with flex fuel capability for vehicles, also mandated by the government, Brazil is poised to weather any oil crisis that comes along. We see China rapidly developing solar and wind energy. Our progress in America is stymied because of political ramifications. We need to develop smart electric grids and implement all the viable clean energy sources that are feasible.
