If we were a big, lazy, greedy, self-serving industry and "no one said anything" then why not. I dont like arrogant, mentally lazy, go with the flow, sorta people. You work at Battelle don't you?

Tim the Hunter said the Amish "have a tendance to be interbred." The correct word in "inbred." I wonder who is inbred now?

I find it very interesting all of the myths and stereotypes we have about the Amish/Mennonite communities - and there isn't the usual backlash to get the story straight as the traditional practicing folk wouldn't be reading this!

KOMRB wrote: "...she and her fellow researchers reveal that they found no such markers and instead are left wondering whether the Amish have genetic differences that protect them from cancer." I find that statement erroneous, considering they looked at cancer REPORTS, not DNA. To say they don't have genetic markers when their DNA wasn't analyzed is wrong. Cancer isn't just genetic; it's environmental, and considering they a) eat non-processed, whole foods, b) get lots of physical activity and c) aren't exposed to constant EMF like mainstream population, it's not surprising they have significantly lower cancer rates. Our lifestyles cause cancer, folks. I agree - the cancer I had was caused by genetic mutation - what ENVIRONMENTAL agent caused that mutation, nobody knows. I'm willing to bet processed food and Diet Coke.

Back in the old days at battelle, dont know how it looks today inside, you could take someone on a tour and not tell them what it was and pretend its just mental assylum in heaven and theyd believe it. Each solid metal door you open youd say something like "and this is John Doe working on his great neutron accellerator or this is george with his adhesives research (with people stuck on the wall in various positions)" No, I have much more space and domain.

Mike wrote: Farming is very dangerous work when done the way the Amish do it. What is their average life span? Maybe they are dying younger and not having enough years to develop cancer. Amish average life span is the same as the general US population. The quirk is, they have had that life span for 300 years, ours is much lower without modern medicine. They do not use near as much modern medicine as we do.

There are many factors that increase cancer rates, some of which the Amish are more even more exposed to than we are, but the primary reason they have less cancer is right under our noses. Their way of life minimizes their exposure to radiation. Radiation whether natural or manmade, is the ultimate cause of ALL cancer. It is the only thing capable of mutating DNA. Without DNA mutation, there is no cancer. EMF is radiation and we immerse ourselves in a sea of it. This is on top of the normal radiation we receive from natural sources.
