No brown tide bloom since 2001, says the article... until you get to the last line and it mentions a brown tide bloom last year too?

The Southwest sewer pipe has killed the Great South Bay.The bay has not seen a decent Clam set since that pipe came online !!! We have taken away the fresh water that used to perk into bay . That life giving water is now pumped offshore in a sewer pipe . You researchers can spend all the money you want , put that fresh water back in the bay and the bay will be on it's way to health !!!!!!!!!

Un-Holy Sodomites Robin! The Pines and The Grove would be just the ideal location for a new inlet!

I have been out of the Great South Bay for about 7 years now but used to do recreational clamming off the shore between Cherry Grove and Davis Park. We would end up with a bucket of 12 to 15 dozen clams in about an hour. You would hit one of those clam beds and that rake would never come up empty. Of course this was all fun .. in a dinghy. To all the commercial clammers .. this is your livlihood. You guys work hard everyday. I now buy your clams, I can't live without them! lol
Keep up the good work! Go with the tide .. wherever it brings you. You will survive!

The bay needs a few hug pipes under fire Island to the Ocean to help the tides flush it out. As it stands it is becoming a South Shore run off holding tank Cesspol. A big toilet with No Flush. Getting Worst evry year. Brown, sometimes a Red tinge.. And yes you can get skin diseases, and very sick from that water.

I agree 100% with Joe American - The Bay needs better filtration!

I moved from the northshore of LI to Lindenhurst, purchased a house south of Indian Island on a canal that leads to the Great South bay, a mini paradise. The wind for sailing are the best for the entire season, I sail a Dragonfly Trimaran with a shoal draft and are able to deal with some of the shoal areas. The Bay is fantastic for a sailor, with the acception of the ugly and smelly Bergen Point clearing station. You can see the tankers dropping off their smelly cargo from all over the Island day and night. I wonder who was the genius who approved the location and the construction of this environmental disaster, it must have a damaging effect on the Bay.One other disturbing menace are the cigarette speed boats that are not only a noisy danger disturbing the peace and ecology of the Bay. I question the ability of the boat operator and their mental state, they are imature and selfish unlicensed meniacs racing without any concideration for other boaters! Where is the law? who allows this to continue, I would suggest a class action against all those that violate the Bay and the safty of our local water ways! Lets take some action, sincerely Karl Boecker

A brown tide happens for a number of different reasons including raw sewage, road runoff, fertalizers, pestacides, etc. We need to ask ourselves, do we need a greener lawn or healthier waters? Whats more important spraying insecticdes or reducing cancer? Brown tide can be erased. Laws need to be put in place and everone needs to do there part.

I agree about the commment about incredibly noisy and dangerous speedboats day and night tearing up the bay. How can this go on? There are laws. We would not tolerate people destroying the peace and causing as dangerous situation in a park, highway or neighborhood. Why is it tolerated in the bay. These selfish people are not helping the environment at all.
