I saw the film when it first came out in NYC and loved Weisz' performance as Hypatia. Amenabar distorts some history in service to his art (the Library didn't end that way and Synesius wasn't a jerk), but that's what artists do. I don't go to the movies for history. For people who want to know more about the historical Hypatia, I highly recommend a very readable biography "Hypatia of Alexandria" by Maria Dzielska (Harvard University Press, 1995). I also have a series of posts on the historical events and characters in the film at my blog (http://faithljustice.wordpress.com )- not a movie review, just a "reel vs. real" discussion.

My husband and I watched Agora on pay per view cable last Weds. The movie was fantastic. The early christian beginnings and it's off shoots were nothing but criminals and thugs who twisted the scriptures to justify their lust for riches, control, control over women, murder and wars. Education was last on the list. Today the christian church and its off shoots are educated in the art of psychololgy (devils and souls) to control their sheep and their money. To be fair though, the pagans did their share to exercise their power of control too. One example; throwing christians and anyone who did't agree with the pagan ruler at the time to the lions for bloodlust entertainment. The pagans were the ones who gave birth to the arts, free thinking, math, science, education, etc....and to philosophers who questioned organized religion and concluded that it's poison to the masses. The movie is worth watching.

Jesus predicted this in the Aquarian Gospel after his resurrection, when he teleported into the midst of the white-robed Silent Brotherhood in its temple in Heliopolis, Egypt. "This coming age is not one of light. Men shall pervert my church and make it a tool of deceit. But you, my brothers, are wise...you know that my life was a great drama for the sons of men. I lived to demonstrate the possibilities of Man."

Daily Horoscope for June 2

Capricorn

You feel like overindulging yourself in some way today, and why not? Throw caution to the wind and eat your way through a big bar of chocolate, or have a retail therapy session that leaves you reeling from the amount of money you've spent. There's a definite chance you could get carried away and tell a whopper of a story that has little resemblance to what really happened. What on earth has got into you?
