An Israeli lifeguard taking his regular morning swim off the Mediterranean coast in southern Israel discovered a 2,500-year-old marble talisman to ward off the evil eye, the Israel Antiquities Authority said ...

If institutions voluntary offered rewards worth having for reporting and turning in such finds compared to "Thank You" or "Good citizen" both of which are nothing but lip service maybe they would have more artifacts.
Even an archaeologists video game will offer rewards for finding artifacts but in the real world those who desire to possess everything they can get their hands on of value see rewards as cutting into their profits and anyone who wants a reward is labeled an opportunist or extortionist. Meanwhile some museum increases their net worth with stuff like this, it can't be bought or sold but financial value is assigned to it and it is insured. This guy does not research what he found, it is the 5th one, he flushes a million dollars down the toilet. If this relic is part of Jewish history and culture/religion then it is different. If is not that then pump it for all it's worth. |

1 There is no sign of these Israelites in the so called times of the mythical David and king Solomon. There is not evidence of such a people as the Israelites but we are learning through archaeology much about the ancestors of Western culture, the Semitic speaking Phoenicians. In the early mists of antiquity the Phoenicians created a rich sea-trading empire, which spanned the known world. They were famous for their cedar ships, purple cloth, the alphabet and much more. They also created a golden society, which we are only now beginning to understand and appreciate. Read about the Phoenicians here: http://www.phoenician.org/index.html |

1 Sigh... The Phoenicians (Sea People) came from someplace in Greece. They settled in fishing villages around the Mediterranean coast. EVERYONE came from someplace else. Except maybe the aboriginal Africans. Israelites ruled Phoenician land after they defeated Phoenicians. Also, the Hebrews of the Exodus invented the alphabet. And the "golden society" you are speaking of included tying people between two columns and ripping them apart. Their God required this. |

1 http://www.springerlink.com/content/4b9fltx6c... "According to historical records part, or perhaps the majority, of the Moslem Arabs in this country descended from local inhabitants, mainly Christians and Jews, who had converted after the Islamic conquest in the seventh century AD (Shaban 1971; Mc Graw Donner 1981). These local inhabitants, in turn, were descendants of the core population that had lived in the area for several centuries, some even since prehistorical times (Gil 1992). On the other hand, the ancestors of the great majority of present-day Jews lived outside this region for almost two millennia. Thus, our findings are in good agreement with historical evidence and suggest genetic continuity in both populations despite their long separation and the wide geographic dispersal of Jews." As you can see, the "palestinians" have no claim over the land they say they have been in since the beginning. |

1 You're trying to defend the palestinians when they say they are decedents of the philistines and you are saying they are decedents of the phoenicians. Try to get your story straight before you spread propaganda. |

1 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_ancie... As you can see the phoenicians lived in what is now lebanon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philistia As you can see, philistia was only gaza. And there is no sign of Israelite evidence? Do you not see the city of Jerusalem itself? Do you not see the western wall? Or the Temple Mount? I guess you do see it, but you just don't want to believe it because you are just a typical anti-Semite, you don't want to believe the truth. |

1 This is so far off topic I boggle at how far you will go to have an Israel/Palestine argument. But it’s also so incorrect I feel the need to point some things out. For one thing ‘Palestine’ is not a fictional land – Palaistine is a Greek word in recorded use for the last 2,500 years. The Arabic version of this word is Filastin. Also, it’s a geographic term, not an ethnographic term. The people that lived in the area of Palaistine (or Filastin) are referred to as Palaistines or Filastines (these are of course Anglicised versions of languages that use different alphabets). Being ‘Palestinian’ or ‘Filastine’ has nothing to do with religion and, considering the sheer number of peoples that have invaded or travelled through this area, technically does not even denote an ethnic group (you could be a Persian Palestinian, or a Hittite or a Mongol, Egyptian or Roman. Or a Chinese Palestinian – if you live in the area known on and off for the last 2,500 years as Palestine). If this confuses you, do recall that anyone who lives in Israel is called Israeli and anyone who lives in Brazil is called Brazilian despite the fact they may be Christian, Jew, Muslim, Atheist, Flying Spaghetti Monsterist, white, black or brindle. That should pretty well settle your bizarre claims there is no such thing as Palestine. Can I also point out the inherent ridiculousness of claiming group X has no claim to the holy land because they are descended from jews (some probably are but so what?) while trying to claim that Y group DOES have a claim, and a damn good claim that beats every other claim even of the people who were living there when Y group turned up 60 years ago, because they invaded the place, killed or out-competed most of the groups there for the next 800 years until they, in turn, were out-competed and killed and moved elsewhere? Do you see how weird and, forgive me, stupid that claim is?‘Our ancestors weren’t the first group here and they weren’t the last group here but, by massacre, trade and out-breeding they did control it for about 800 years out of the last 3200. So, uh, that’s why it should be ours forever. Coz a couple of millennia ago, some people that most of us are no more related to than present day Germans and Russians lived there.’ I can only imagine that if you actually truly think this, if you think Israel’s right to exist is rooted in ancient history rather than the simple fact it does exist, then you also think the remaining native Americans have a claim to your individual house that beats your own claim. It truly is exactly the same thing. Israel deserves to exist because it does exist. No other reason is relevant, cogent or logical. It doesn’t, however, deserve support for stealing land, water, maintaining an occupation of a foreign country and using the national army to kill civilians every time a dissident group kills an Israeli. I make no comment here whatsoever about the condemnation I hold for Israel’s enemies – that is utterly irrelevant to whether Israel’s actions are helpful or harmful and wehther Israel has stolen land from Palestine. Very very often they are not at all helpful. |

1 Jumpin Jive. Keep me alive. What the heck is all this ethnic hatred here??? Anyone who knocks the Jewish people is lower than a snake's belly in my mind. Any so-called Christian who puts down Jews as Christ-killers is evil and wrong. It was the Romans who killed Christ. They got the common people all stirred up. Cease and desist! Fornicating morons! |

You prove my case. Although I am against a secular Jewish state this is not what’s important. This has nothing to do with Palestinians. We must base our history on Fact, hard evidence on the ground and through all the archaeological sciences. Science is getting a back set to myths and superstitions. What is happening is the theft and distortion of history. And the historic genocide of a people that are no longer here to defend themselves. Just look at the link its referenced well. http://www.phoenician.org/index.html Its your history learn it or repeat it. |

1 The story goes In the time of Jesus Jerusalem was part of Roman. The elite Jewish Pharisees were against Jesus as they were looking for a Massier to lead there separatist movement to free them from taxes, Jesus a populist socialist who called to “pay unto Cesar” so services could be given to the public. The well documented terrorist Sicarii group were funded by a small group of rich Elites Pharisees with all the power through corruption had Jesus killed. This angered Rome so much that the first Jewish-Roman War started, leading to all the Sicarii, zealot extremists fleeing to Masada where they were held under siege until their eventual suicide. All those responsible for Jesus death met their end at Masada and this is justice enough.
