The Potohar Upland commonly called the Potohar Plateau, lies to the south of northern mountains and is flanked in the west by River Indus and in the east by River Jhelum. This 1,000 - 2,000 ft upland is a typical arid landscape with denuded and broken terrain characterized by undulations and irregularities. These are a few outlying spurs of Salt Range in the south, and those of Khair Murad and Kala Chitta Range in the north. The ramparts of the Salt Range stretching from east to west in the south separate Potohar from the Punjab Plain. The real importance of the Salt Range lies in the large deposits of pure salt at Khewra and Kalabagh and the large seams of coal at Dandot and Makerwal.
The Punjab Plain comprises mainly the province of Punjab. It is the gifted fertile land of River Indus and its five eastern tributaries - Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej and Beas. The plain spreads from the south of Potohar up to Mithankot, where Sulaiman Range approaches river Indus. A unique network of canals extensively irrigates the entire plain. This system has been greatly expanded and improved in recent years by the construction of link-canals, dams, and barrages. Two large dams - Tarbela Dam on river Indus and Mangla Dam on river Jhelum having water storage capacities of 11.1 million acre ft and 5.55 million acre ft respectively, have been built. Irrigation is also supplemented by summer and winter rains (15 - 20 inches) and a variety of crops are produced. The major ones being wheat, rice, cotton, and sugarcane. The region has earned the name of grainary of Pakistan. |

Dear Sir or Madam, I am research student at the University of Bolton. I am writing a paper about a fossil egg uncovered in the 70s by Prof. Bob Savage during the 70s in a Dhok Yakoob (Punjab, Salt Range, Potwar Plateau) a little village/hamlet near Uchhri in Pakistan. I have unsucceesfully been trying to locate Dhok Yakoob in a map and unfortunately knowing its exact locatiton is vital for my scientific location. Please, I would appreciate if you could help us to find it. I add that Dhok Yakoob is a very common name in Pakistan. In fact, Multimaps says that Dhok Yakoob is or is in Duzab, Balochistan, Pakistan away from Uchhri. http://www.multimap.com/map/places.cgi... To my knowledge, Pr. Savage never undertook any field mission in Balochistan. On the other hand, he participated in many parties in Punjab (Salt Range, Potwar Plateau), - Besides, the prefix “Dhok” is essentially used in Punjab (it is a Punjabi word). There are more than 1.200 Pakistani cities beginning with “Dhok”, but only three of them are not located in the Punjab Province, but in North West Frontier Province." I wouldn't think it would necessarily show on any map until you get down to a scale of 1/25000 or so. And maybe not even then. As Pierre-Olivier says, Dhok just means village, or even just settlement, and such a place can be just a cluster of a few farmsteads. Yakoob sounds like Jacob and might be a Koranic reference and very common. Oy Harminder! Do some research before u make bogus comments, There are 3 million Hindus in Pakistan, mainly in Sindh, to be fair theres only around 25000 sikhs nationally. 5000 plus Pesahwari sikhs, with Gurdwara Bhai Joga Singh in full use. Pakistan maintains the holy Sikh sites of Nankana Sahib, Dehra Sahib Lahore, and Panjha Sahib, Hasan Abdul, The first Sikh soldier was inducted into the Pak Army recently also a Sikh man has become Traffic Officer for Lahore Police

I live in Talagang and it is more than safe. Please ignore these rude and nonsensical arguments. Unfortunately there are no Sikhs or Hindus in Talagang but a lot of the old buildings are still there and they still have the names of the people who lived there before partition. But again unfortunately economics is fast changing that. If you ever wish to visit I would be more than happy to help you in any way i can. By the way i live in the U.K |
