Takes half an acre/person to grow food on 5 billion acres of farm ground in the world using current technology can support 10 bill, baring any crop failure due to drought, desease, infestation or "acts of god" Population growing 2-3%/yr and irrigation water being converted to urban use means we're gonna have to be more efficient and develope better technologies. I just can't see us going backwards and using 100 year old practices.

North America spends Less than 10% of it's disposable income on (eat @ home food) Western Europe and Japan 15%. Most of the rest 20-60%. Only a few states can grow fruits and vegetables year round. Green houses would work but the cost?

A new Mercy For Animals investigation is pulling back the curtains on the largest dairy factory farm in New York State Willet Dairy in Locke.
In early 2009 an MFA undercover investigator worked at the mega-dairy, secretly documenting egregious acts of animal cruelty, including neglect, with a hidden camera.
Thankfully, compassionate consumers can choose to withdraw their support of these abusive industries by adopting a vegan diet.
Each time we eat we can choose kindness over cruelty. Visit ChooseVeg.com for dairy-free recipes.
the videoEvidence gathered during the investigation reveals:
* Cows with bloody open wounds, prolapsed uteruses, pus-filled infections, and swollen joints, apparently left to suffer without veterinary care
* "Downed" cows those too sick or injured to even stand left to suffer for weeks before dying or being killed
* Workers hitting, kicking, punching, and electric-shocking cows and calves
* Calves having their horns burned off without painkillers, as a worker shoved his fingers into the calves' eyes to restrain them
* Calves having their tails cut off a painful practice condemned by the American Veterinary Medical Association as cruel and unnecessary
* Newborn calves forcibly dragged away from their mothers by their legs, causing emotional distress to both mother and calf
* Cows living in overcrowded sheds on manure-coated concrete flooring
* Workers injecting cows with a controversial bovine growth hormone, used to increase milk production
I said I watched the video. This was found at a dairy, meaning one.

Anyone in their right mind would stay as far away from McDonald's as possible, regardless of how many calories are in the slop they're offering.

Certainly not more than the cost of raising/SUBSIDIZING farm animals...And at far less the risk to farm workers, public health and the environment.

California banned tail docking. they didn't give the farmer the right or choice to use anesthesia. they just banned it. Tail docking is used on animals the same way circumcision is used on humans. it's used for hygenic purposes.
Actually the reason they do it is just so the cow can't brush the dairy worker with it while they apply the milking machine. I'd feel sorry for any cow that's had it's tail cut off, as it wouldn't be able to swat away flies during the summer.

You should try opening your heart and mind.

Our vegan Thanksgiving meals (and we've had many) are downright delicious, and everyone walks away satisfied and happy...

And best of all, not only do we have so much, for which to be thankful, we extend that blessing to other animals as well.

No bones, no blood, no corpses in our kitchen. It's all clean, beautiful, nutritious, living food.

Why should someone have to die just for us to celebrate a holiday?! Aren't we lucky enough to be on holiday in the first place!

It keeps a soiled tail away from a prepped and clean udder during and post milking. Tail docking is used to keep the cows back cleaner so as not to attract flies. There were alot of things wrong with way the tail docking was performed on this 1 dairy. Thanks to this undercover photographer, this 1 farmer will fire this 1 employee and consult with his local veterinarian about ways to implement proper procedure on this farm.

that's the personal choice you've made. I personally choose to have turkey. I should always have the right to make that choice.

What about putting them down the way vets do to old or sick pets? Just a shot and they go night forever.

I see that this thread has gone way down the human communication scale. Once more there is something that could be worked out somehow. And to whomever it is that calls people who care about the treatment of animals obama pple -please!!!- it's not divided by poilitics! I am a conservative and most of my friends are too- we all agree that things can be improved
PS I am am amazing cook and cook for many people- I would rather eat sand paper than eat McDonalds- it smells , reaks, their meat is gross don't know hat they do to it?

most on this post would say "don't put them down at all, just set them free" "Stop raising animals to be put down for food in the first place" I personally want to have the right to eat a club sandwich. Your vet suggestion, i feel, is good one. unfortunatly there's an additional cost involved that the processor and retailer can't or won't pass onto the consumer. Those costs usually get thrown back at the producer. I researched some ballpark #'s and found it cost like $50-150 to euthanize a pet and the approved drugs can only be administered by a vet. PETA has stated that 10 bil animals a year are used for food. If the consumer would compensate them for it, the producers would do it. People eat McDonalds cause it's cheap and convenient. Most don't know the difference between a rib-eye or ground beef.
