Stop by the I-355 and 159th area for a good close look at all the businesses that have arrived ?? No fear tactics...it is a reality...not a good one...but a reality regardless. Wrong people on the council you say....well.. how much happenned with the LAST council ?? Yeah I know....I'm totally wrong !! Sooner or later blaming the economy won't be enough. This is about pollution. Nothing more. How can it even be legal to put a business from the very industry that caused the pollution in the first place back onto a site that is not yet remediated? File your complaint NOW with the EPA. Get it stopped. Isn't one centure of living with carcinogens enough for one town?

I'm a Lockport resident believes that the rail line and storage tanks would be a huge benefit to the town. I believe it's a stretch of a very vivid imagination that the downtown area won't be developed because of the rail line. Stench? I don't think so. I've walked along the bike trail many times past the Shell tanks and have never come across an alleged oil stench.
Rail cars loaded with oil already pass through this area. Heck, rail cars with extremely hazardess chemicals routinely pass through town on both rails. I have never experienced any stench from any of these rail cars.
I'm quite sure I could go to the chamber of commerce this afternoon and ask your question. I'm also quite sure that there hasn't been any potential downtown developer that has said, "you know, I'm going to spend a half million to renovate a building downtown but the deal is off if you can't guarantee that the old Texaco site will never have any oil related businesses in the next 20 years".
Chevron owns the property. Chevron has every right to develop that property as long as that development meets the zoning requirements.
I've read the CARE propaganda. Their concerns make as much sense as worrying about Klingons attacking Earth next month.
I'd like to see the first shovel of dirt moved for the project next week.
This is about pollution. PERIOD. The site is not yet remediated. Nothing should be happening until that site is blessed as clean after 100 years of pollution. If it were your family that had to live with that health hazard, you might not be so quick to jump. Please don't be swayed by dollars. We can't take them with us to the grave. I thought this generation was about going GREEN. Yes, I support getting off the dependency on foreign oil. But there are protocols for cleaning up things first. Haste makes waste, and in some cases, DEATH. Just when you thought it might be safe to continue living here, they put forth something like this. Please take a ride down New Avenue and watch them still cleaning up that oil leak. Multiply that by 100 years. That's what we are facing. Surely we don't need more of this now. BTW, try looking up Cogent. JUST WHO ARE THEY?

The area in question has been remediated. Therefore, there isn't anything left in the ground all the way to the bedrock.

Did you even pay attention to Cogent or are your ears closed?

The tanks will be surrounded by a berm. That berm will be able to contain 2 1/2 times the volume of the tank it surrounds. I can guarantee you that the entire area that surrounds the tank will have some type of rubberized or flexible plastic container.

Any potential floodwater will not be able to go over the top of the berm. However, if in the unlikely event that it did, the water will be contained within the entire structure.

If flood water ever does get high enough to get into the area of the tanks the people of the Westside will be under 10-12 feet of water.

Any drop of oil on the ground caused by any leaks anywhere on the property will be a moot point because the entire West side will have floated down to Joliet. You will also have to worry about the barges coming down the Sanitary Ship Canal floating around in what was once your back yard.

Anything is possible my friend...ANYTHING. Remember...we were never going to get a hundred year rain ever again. How'd that work our for you. BP said their oil platform had ALL the safety precautions you could ever need. How's that work out for the Gulf. By the way...the area is NOT totally remediated....Chevron and Cogent both said it. Anyway...this is all a moot point. The city has signed off on the "concept" plan which is a "go ahead" in my mind. Sooooooo...GO AHEAD ! Lockport has to live with their decisions. Just think about ALL that tax money you will be saving ! I'll put that one in the same category as the hundred year rain.

Let's see if I can understand your analogy.

A valve that breaks on land versus a valve that breaks one mile below the surface of the ocean.

I'd explain the difference but I suspect it would be too difficult for you to understand.

You are right, anything is possible. Remember that when you get in your car today and drive to the store. It is quite possible that an airplane can fall out of the sky after being attacked by Romulins and Klingons and it will fall on your car. You could crawl out from underneath the car, take our your phaser, call Captain Kirk to send down Mr. Spock and you could save the earth!!

Or,

on the way to the store you could be stopped at a railroad crossing 500 feet from the tracks. The train could jump the tracks, spin 16 times in the air and be on the way to wipe out your car. But you are saved by Superman and Spiderman from instant death because the use their combined super powers to lift the train saving you from certain death.

After all, anything could happen.

You are a total joke! Your posts show who you are. You are going no where. This town was booming under leadership that counted. It is at a complete standstill. This council looks like a group of jerks. We have a multi million dollar medical center with wonderful equipment, no thanks to the present council. They have nothing that they instituted. Yep, they are a joke! Election time will prove that out. Keep screaming!!!!!!! Keep lying!!!!!! But you know something, you lost!!!! And you are losing more each and every meeting with those old duffers. Smart people know how to control themselves. It proves they are not business people as business people do not act like they act in public. Bye!!!!

Excellent analogy. One can appreciate your candor and knowledge of Star Trek and other cartoon characters. You must spend a lot of time watching old TV. Try getting out more often. However..BP WAS A FACT...west side flooding was and is a FACT...and yes...anything can happen...just hope IT DOES'NT. I'll keep an eye out for those tank cars at the rail crossing...just in case they do jump off the tracks ! Thanks for the warning...DARTH !

Over 50,000 people are injured or killed in automobile accidents every year. More people will die from adverse reactions to prescribed medications in the next month than have been injured or killed by the oil industry in the past five decades.

Yes, there was a flood in 1997. What does that have to do with any new oil tanks or rail lines? Yes, there was an oil leak one mile below the surface of the Gulf of Mexico. What does that have to do with a rail line on the old Texaco plant?

Hoping that something doesn't happen doesn't mean a darn thing.

In the mean time, I suggest you stay at home and watch some old TV. I just hope that a meteor doesn't fall out of the sky and destroy your home while you are watching Laura Petrie sliding out of the front closet on a pile of walnuts. You might want to check and see if your spouse has eyes in the back of their head.

Who cares if it is the same business that was previously there? You act like that is a negative.
Barge and train access can be a bad thing if the users are bringing product to the site by truck (via 9th and 171)to ship out. Inversely, it is a bad thing if barges and trains are bringing in product to ship out by trucks through our town.
This is ideal because it is train in. There is no truck traffic coming out of the site. Only oil is going to be able to use the site this way because the only item that will stay on site is oil going to the tank farm.
William, you make a valid point about truck traffic, but why is the city only interested in promoting more oil? There are other businesses that could utilize this site which pose less of a hazard to the community. If this site is allowed to be dominated by oil no other types of businesses will be interested.

For that reason, this property is not well suited for industries that require a high level of truck traffic in order to conduct their business.
The two railroads, the Sanitary & Ship Canal and the existing pipelines make this property attractive to industries that can utilize these assets...
Chevron is actively marketing this property, but its unique characteristics limit the potential businesses that might want to locate there.
The food industry can also make use of the train and barge access with less potential for harm to the community.

Also, where did you find the information on how Chevron is marketing the property?

Well, to begin with they do not have a business sense at all. They have run developers out of town. They are out to not build rooftops. Rooftops bring developers to a region. Look at the surrounding communities and they welcome rooftops. Then business wants to locate where there is alot of people. Look at Frankfort, Romeoville and Bolingbrook. These are development communities. This town has had it until there is a change on the city council majority. It is going down fast in all aspects. Most communities would not stand for the lack of answers of the residents. It is deplorable. You do not have to believe me, just check the communities for yourself. Don't believe Kelly Turner's opinion.

Food industry, two grain terminals across the canal closed for several years and rotting away. Food processing like corn products, no thanks smells way worse then a refinery let alone just storage. Power plant already closing midwest generation coal plants, so nuke plant or natural gas? How about an ethanol plant? Possiblities are endless but reality is one else is coming.

No. Argo/Summit is the ugly exception. Kraft is in Glenview, Pepsi Co in Barrington, Ventura in Thornton, Quantum and Saratoga in Bolingbrook, Diageo in Plainfield. Some of these places look like plants, others look like warehouses. But you're right: no one will come if Chevron and Lockport are only courting oil.

There is a good reason for an oil company to use the site as an oil depot
it's called infrastructure.
some pipelines are already in the area
two major rail lines and the water way
some storage tanks currently there
plus seeing that it was used for the oil industry it should be easier to permit than site never used
for oil industry before

that land has been industrial long before I even got here and the same for most of us

if you don't like it why did you move to this area?
citgo refinery has been there for a long time
do you want that shut down too??

if you are worried about truck traffic
why don't you go and join the Amish?

when you go to the grocery store how did the items get to the store? by truck of course

get a life or get out of town.

99 post and no one still gets it. Very limited possibilities for this site. It is zoned for the use brought before the city so they can't turn it down without good reason or they will end up in court wasting money we don't have.

If anyone can please tell me what else can actually go on here it would be very helpful.

It's unlikely alternate uses will be found if no one will discuss any.
