The usual progenitor stars of type II supernovae are the most common type with the lowest mass able to just produce Fe in the core as a result of the core being heavier then 1.4 solar masses.
The progenitor going "pop" at that stage may be as low as 2 or 3 solar masses and is likely to be a covctive polycellular core type with either a WR type or red supergiant type outer envelope to view.
The absolute bolometric magnitude would approach -6 or -7 (about the same as a bright nova), and the star may be a brillian yellow supergiant resembling epsilon Aurigae as a result of the loss of the outer nuclear burning shells (too expanded to function).
The spherical lumpy mechanism is therefore going to be the most common.
The Gamma cassiopeiae signature stars are more massive than the usual type II progenitor but will also be correspondingly rarer. Their signature will be the bipolar type but will also produce a Gamma ray burst which should be relatively easy to spot as a result of reflection from the associated bipolar nebula surrounding the star.
