Roadshow: Parking in front of a neighbor's house is legal but irritating

Jun 30, 2009 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Ledger Dispatch

Q: Whoa, Mr. Roadshow! Were you short on space the other day? Yes, it's legal to park in front of someone else's house, as you wrote.

is there anything you can do about neighbors that park infront of driveways or don't leave you a parking spot?i have neighbors that live two houses down they have about 6 cars parked at there residence and then they park the other seven infront of me,and another neighbors house blocking partial driveways and leaving me no spot to park. i have a disadled husband(IN WHEELCHAIR).parking across the street with 5 kids and a husband in a wheelchair is very hard to get across the street let alone try to unload grocery and things.i really don't mind if they park infront of my house all i'm asking is to haVE SOME RESPECT AND LEAVE ME ONE PARKING SPOT.

we also have this problem, we can't put are garbage cans out and we get notes from the mailman not to block the mailbox the thing is its not are car the neighbor has been asked not to park there but they want their car in the shade and since i have shade trees they think they have the right to park there. I would not have a problem if they could respect are wishes and park further back so my mail can be delivered with out me getting notes from my mailman... and be able to get my garbage picked up without cars in the way....

I have not neighbor but people living in a apatment complex down the street when there is ample prking on the side street wheres there is no buisnesses, why dont they park in those street they have to park in front of my house or a neighbor next to me house. people living in the apartment complex down the street are starting to park in our clean nieghrborhood area. I dont care if it a public street, They do have the right to park there at times but when there is parking in front of businesses then heck why dont you park there! ive lived ere 30 years and never had such rude people parking their cars. Im going to leave a letter on thier window shield, Letting them know not to park there car there and park along the business street, just because our nieghborhood is nice and clean they leave thier car parked there all day. Not my fault you bought a apt complex and rent out other room to other people, your complex has parking, why dont you use it! DONT USE OUR STREET! several nieghbor have complained to me about people doing stuff, so now it times to take action! Im sure any of you morons who think just because its a public street they can park there when you own your own home or until you own your own home, you have NOTHING to say about these things!

I am tired of home owners who think they own the street and parking area in front of their own home when there is no where else to park. Some times I have no choice but to park where I park with my small compact car, but calling the police department and making a false claim of vehicle Abatement is not the way I was brought up, I consider it cowardly and just being mean.

You never know when you may want your neighbor to keep an eye out for any wrong doings around your home and property. Doing anything to someones property that does not belong to you could back fire, especially now days.

<quoted text>do you realize it's a matter of courtesy . What if you would like to have family over or you yourself use that spot for a work vehicle . Why should we have to park away from our own home because most have lost their manners. Of course people can park where they want but what upsets me is they don't take into consideration how their actions affect others.
This is EXACTLY how I feel!!!! People just don't care and are not courteous enough to others. Its public parking and it SUCKS that we can't do anything about it!

There should be a law restricting neighbors from parking in front of your house. My neighbor keeps parking in front of my house even though he has plenty of space in his driveway and around the curb sides. It's not like he's hosting a party and is in need of space. He just prefers to crowd up our view as oppose to his. This is really annoying, and I do wish there is some sort of regulation that can resolve this.

So I am not alone with this issue, I understand that the space in front of my home I do not own and can deal with the cars parked there most of the time. But when they throw their trash into my yard...drinks, cigarettes etc that bothers me. And the other issue is that they are costing a potential drug dealer, who in their right mind has over 10 different friends visiting everyday for an hour or so????? The parents have been asked time and again to have their sons friends park in front of their house with no luck. Anything I can do?

basically....NO. We are stuck with people with no respect for others and think the world owes them everything. People in this city in general are rude, selfish and think the world revolves around them. Yes, the parking on the street is public parking and is open to everyone, but common sense dictates that one should park in front of their own residence. If more than one vehicle, then they should park farther away and walk. If multiple vehicles, and no space, then sell them.
You are basically left with the same decision my family is faced with, moving out of this godforsaken town. The next place we buy we will definately look at the garage siaze, driveway size and what parking is like in front before purchasing.

Glad I found this string and I'm not alone. I have mostly awesome neighbors except for the one right across the street. Can't talk to him as he just yells at you. I've only asked two things: leave a space (there's enough room for two cars) and not to park in front of garbage cans (they won't pick up). They park dead center in front of my house so no one else can park there and still do. Of course they have space in front of their house and thats why it bothers me. It's not like parking is at a premium on my street. Now they just leave the cars for days parked that way. There is more to it but to much to put here. Maybe it is public space, but that doesn't give you a right to be an a** to others.

On the street where I live, we are all very respectful of where we park. It's courtesy. My neighbors know my husband parks in front of our house, I'm in the driveway. All three of my parents have health issues, and if they had to park down the street it would make it difficult for them to visit. My neighbors leave the second spot in front if my house open, if possible for our guests. I do the same for them. The trouble and rudeness comes in from guests visiting the apartments at the end if the street. They have people that pull in the middle of the parking in front of the houses. Not forward, not back, in the middle. My husband can't park in front of the house, neither can my daughter or our guests. They leave no room for another car. That is so disrespectful and annoying. Thankfully, it hasn't been happening as often. Also, if my neighbors or myself see somebody doing this we try to talk to them and get them to pull up or move back and leave a space for the homeowner.

I have this problem as well. My neighbors regularly have friends over to visit, and they always park in front of my house, and the curb in front of the neighbors house is totally clear? Wouldn't it be common sense for people to park in front of the house they're visiting??
We have the same problem with our neighbor! We're thinking he's asking his visitors to park in front of our house in a P/A attempt to pay us back for feeding squirrels since nothing else explains it and he hates squirrels. We're going to park our own cars there from now on.

You people need to shut up.

I came to this forum looking for news about the crash in the Italian restaurant and I wound up here.

Do you know how stupid you sound???

First, it's perfectly alright to park in front of someone else's house if it is otherwise legal. Stop being so petty. I am homeless and I'll park in front of any house in any town to sleep at night. Yours might me next, so get over it.

Second, this thread ends now. It is closed for comments. It's ridiculous to have a thread from 2009 about a petty issue still going.

Plus, comments are no longer allowed since the article linked to in the original post is now gone. It said the article had been removed. So it's not fair when commenters likeme have not gotten a chance to read it. Thus, any thread about that article must also be stopped. If it doesn't, I'll notify the moderator to shut this thread down.

For those who complain about people parking in front of your house, nicely ASK and maybe they'll respect you.
I HATE it when they go behind your back and slash your tires, or key your car and say they don't know nothing about it.
Nonetheless, quit yo effin' bitchin!

Are you people serious? You DO NOT OWN THE STREET IN FRONT OF YOUR HOUSE. How is that hard to understand? Spoils the view? What do you do, stay home all day looking out your window? Get a life.

I live at the corner at the bottom of a slight hill. It's part of an old area of town from the early 1900s. The young lady across the street moved in and suddenly there are friends always coming over. The first part of the year, they would always park on my side of the street causing a narrowing of the road.

So beginning late summer 2012, I've been leaving all three trash cans out there full time. No one's complained since so many houses on this corner have cans out there (old houses have cans by the building on the road).

The cross street part of my house which is wide, and I never go out there, people now use. But they commonly don't use her corner. These are the same people I see pull up, whip out their phone, slowly walk up the walk, text, and the door opens. Knocking and door bells are SOOOOOOOooooo 20th century (eyeroll).
