We live in Deluz, behind the base and there is nothing funny about the frequency of fires there. Training exercises can cause fires but when the heat and low humidity are like this, it seems reckless at best.

I'm in Southern Orange County and it seems like the fire is getting worse.
Big plumes of smoke.
Are the water dropping choppers on the scene yet?

Everytime the humidity drops or Santa Ana winds blow, the irresponsible jarheads north of us seem to have a proclivity to start fires. The "command" at Camp P should have some sort of rule that when humidity drops into the teens, the clowns out playing war should desist and bitch slap each other until the cool fog drifts back in from the sea.

The fire is by the golf course, which is the south end of base. Orange County may see smoke, but even if you live in San Clemente the fire would have to travel 17 miles to get to you. That's not going to happen. No idea what the cause of the fire is since there are no ranges in that area of the base. And for those of you who think the Marines should stop using the ranges when conditions are dicey, first, we are in a coastal desert and conditions are almost always going to be dicey. Not to mention the ranges are placed toward the center of the base so there is ample time to control any blaze that might flare up. Then there are 11 fire station throughout the base that respond to any fire. The Marines do a pretty good job keeping fires within their boundaries. And, since our military is all volunteer, if you would like to strap on a rifle and volunteer to take the bullet that all our service members are volunteering to take for your freedom, go ahead. Until then, keep your opinions to yourself.

...or you could just stop all training, never let it burn, and let all the dried dead brush build up to a point that when it DOES burn, and WILL burn, it is fueled too heavily to be controlled.

Ripper Dandy,
I hate to break it to you but most, not all, but most of the time the fires on Pendleton are weather related. Being a nature preserve and all they don't disturb certain areas, which means wild vegitation grows like it would if no one were here. And so you get brush fires and with as hot as it's been the past few days, I'm going to go out on a limb and say it had nothing to do with the guys "playing war". Also those guys playing war aren't playing and are fighting for your freedom. Maybe one of them will find you and bitch slap you!!

Do you mean you can see it from Cottonwood, or it is burning in Cottonwood? I'm in Pacific View and it looked like it had died down when I went in the house.

You feel like overindulging yourself in some way today, and why not? Throw caution to the wind and eat your way through a big bar of chocolate, or have a retail therapy session that leaves you reeling from the amount of money you've spent. There's a definite chance you could get carried away and tell a whopper of a story that has little resemblance to what really happened. What on earth has got into you?
