I have noticed that... But Walmart is not the only factor that is preventing the growth of downtown long beach. If you are familiar with long beach, Walmart co exist with other shops at the Long Beach Towne Center, even with the smaller retail. Walmart don't just draw gang members and section 8. Wealthy people who knows how to handle their money shops at bargain places like Walmart, though it may not see them downtown necessarily. But, as I said before, what are we going to do with what we have now? Walmart at this point the only major retail that is bringing downtown revenue, which is the bottom line to them. It is not just the lower income people who has nothing else to do but kill downtown's economy. It is the lack of support for this area by the locals and the government. Again, reevaluate our leadership. They have not focused on the big picture of piecing together downtown into the mecca it can be. It is obvious that the city thought the Pike is the savior of downtown... It is not. Just as the Pike was revitalized, Pine can be drawn up the same. My grandfather still tells me stories about downtown lb when he was my age... Redevelopment is the theme the local government is riding on yet killing off landmarks like Acres of Books with more condos is not the answer. The lack of unity within an area that is as diverse in demography as the local interests are cannot solve itself. Reformation is the answer to the overall questions downtown residents, particularly pine ave residents and business owners, are looking for. All hope is not lost even though it is getting late... |

What a disgrace it was to fill in rainbow pier with dirt to build a sports arena for money. Killed the major spawning ground for rock crab and so many other marine creatures. It used to be beatifull with paddle boats and paddle boards.Full of people having fun. Where was you Calif, Fish & Game. Not doing their job to protect marine life. Your harbors are just a mess with polution. Where did the queen fish go? Die of polution. Where are the 7-11 perch & butter mouth perch. Too bad your priorities are cash and not enviroment quality of life. Nobody remembers Long Beach had electric trains and electric cars back in the 1950's. Even Proctor & Gamble left town.

3rd Street is located in upscale Santa Monica, not next to a crappy port, surrounded by low income multi family housing.

The problem is coexisting with Walmart. Most of the Towne Center components were there before Walmart opened a store in that complex. Also, Towne Center has variables that Cityplace doesn't (easy freeway access, multiple cities nearby, etc.). Furthermore, Walmart is not a downtown urban concept. I remember speaking with the owner of Versailles Cuban Restaurant when they were attempting to peak his interest for a Cityplace location. He said, "I have three restaurants and you know the locations (La Cienega (LA), Manhattan Beach, Universal CityWalk)." " I doubt I'm going to open up a restaurant in the same place where there is a Walmart." I defy you to find an urban city, other than Long Beach, that placed such a store as its prime downtown retail component. Even Oakland didn't place its new Walmart in the heart of its downtown area. |

"Blue line, aka the Mugger Mover"--IF THAT Ain't the truth!! That was the biggest mistake the City made that I can see. Having the Blue Line just allowed the little gang bangers easy access.

I've been to almost every mainstream fine dining restaurant on both Pine Avenue and inner Long Beach. As a Long Beach resident, to me, it does not matter about the location of a restaurant. If it's great, I'll keep going there. One of my favorites recently happens to be KAVIKAS Grill and Bar. Although, I am not too fond of the young drunk crowds in both the waterfront or Pine Ave.
