Savior needed for Falls of Clyde

Bishop Museum officials are clinging to the hope that a "white knight" will save the historic but deteriorating Falls of Clyde sailing ship, long an attraction in Honolulu Harbor.

Bishop Museum, with the millions upon millions of dollars it has, cannot come up with the money to restore this ship? I still remember, watching on tv, in 1982, when "Hurricane Iwa" blew in on the islands and people were trying to hold on to the ropes to keep the "Falls of Clyde" from being blown out to sea.

Matson used to own this ship as well. It's too bad they and Bishop Estate can't or won't put up the money to get this beauty restored.

They need to burn it down. Make it a pay per view deal with a contest to see who lights the match.

Goodbye Falls of Clyde, nice knowing you.

The fiefdom is tapped [taxed] out. Lords & Ladies of the land want the money more.

Anyway, who benefits from Clyde. It'll just join the long list of landmarks from another era.

Good luck in finding a white knight.

I think you may have the Bishop Museum confused with the Bishop Estate/Kamehameha Schools.

This is typical of the mentality in the islands... bulldoze, knock down, bury, or in the case of the Falls of Clyde, sink, the past in order to make way for the new... all in the name of the almighty dollar.

I have fond memories of touring the ship as a youngster. It provided me and other countless island youth a glimpse into Hawaii's past, and its connection to the world as an integral seafaring locale and important international maritime destination.

Shame on you Bishop Museum for not having the foresight and strategic vision to prepare for this inevitability. By allowing the Falls of Clyde to fall into disrepair, and not have a plan for her restoration, you are failing miserably at your charter. Furthermore, you are robbing past, current and future generations of Hawaii's people an opportunity to hold onto a valuable piece of the islands' history, and learn about Hawaii's oceanic connection to the rest of the world.

Hey how about a novel idea. If you want to preserve this ship (or any ship) pull it out of the water and cement it in place on dry land.

32 million? How many copies could be built from scratch for that?

Very sad. This thing was in a state of disrepair and rot when I first moved to Hawaii in 1998. There was ample time then to begin to address problems with the hull and metal work on the ship. It was certainly disheartening to say the least. It appears that this is typical of the museum in terms of caring for its collections....Look at the Forbes Cave Fiasco for another prime example.

I tell you what, if somebody came and asked me to donate to this cause, I would refuse.

Why should I point the finger at somebody else to pony up the money?

Did you READ the article? The ship has an IRON hull. Sure, there's some wood on it, but...

What a shame; despite whatever disrepair this relic is in, it has been a mini-landmark in Honolulu. There should be SOME value in preserving a piece of Hawaiian maritime history. Surely the benefactors of the Bishop estate can tap their resources!

That drydock idea of willie is a pretty good one. That how the British have managed to preserve the HMS Victory (Lord Nelson's flagship at Trafalger)to this day. Since that ship was built in the 1760s I should think it would also work for a more modern ship like the Falls of Clyde.

I cant believe the people in its charge let it get in such disrepair! Why not get maritime students or anyone else who wants to volunteer to start renovating and save this piece of Hawaii's HISTORY. Ask Matson if they'll pony up some cash, after all this is the vessel that started them and the gouging of Hawaii for over a hundred+ years. Such a loss!

Thanks but I can't take credit for it. We preserved an old lightship that way. Tied it up to a breakwall, built a cofferdam around it then filled it in with concrete. No worries about leaks, one heck of a lot less maintenence because it was not in the water.

Bob Krause is watching you. And he is still keeping his eye on that ship. I guess we could say "WWBD" - What would Bob do?

Falls of Clyde? Thirty0two million? How much would it cost to simply beach it, block it, and have the Sea Scouts spend the next fifty years making old Clyde look spiffy neat and clean? Um?
