A 16-year-old sailor takes on the world

Zac Sunderland sailed Marina del Rey on Wednesday morning standing in the cramped cockpit of his boat, Intrepid, with a varnished tiller in one hand and his eyes focused on a massive yacht coming at us in the ...

Hi John, Thank you for your write up on Zac. His dad Lawrence, was night Harbor Patrol in Emerald Bay, Catalina, where we have a mooring. As night H.P. he was aware of tide & wind changes, & any problems that the boaters may have. On these night runs his son Zac was very often with him.
The family lived onboard their vessal, home schooled. The family, are God loving, well mannered, interesting and always ready for adventure. Thanks again, Toni

The most troubling is that the LAW allows for that and you don’t have people openly crying that this is not only dangerous, but also deeply immoral.
The parents of this kid should be stripped of their parenthood as people exposing their child for completely unnecessary gravely danger.
I’ve been sailing on rough high seas for many years since I was young and I’m a shipbuilder (mechanical engineer with 30 years in shipbuilding). I can only tell that exposing the child to this experience where you need to have many years of intensive training in many fields of trade, in sailing, in health care and in coping with psychological trauma, is simply a criminal act of negligence.

When I was a kid, I spent 3 years with my parents, sailing from California down through Mexico, passing through the Panama Canal, through the Bermuda waters before anyone even really knew about the "Triangle," visiting beautiful places like St. Thomas, the Virgin Islands, even weathering a hurricane in Nova Scotia. It was very difficult at times, and frightening, yet there were a lot of rewarding experiences. I wish all the best to Zac, and "wind in your sails." I'll be following your progress. I too loved that book about Robin's journey. Just a suggestion: cats are good shipboard companions for those long lonely days. ;-)

THERE MUST BE SOME KINDA' COAST GUARD FOLLOWING HIM..HE ALSO PROBABLY HAS REAL EXPERIENCE FIGHTING THROUGH A BIG STORMS..I BELIEVE NO RESPONSIBLE ADULTS/PARENTS WOULD ALLOW A 16 YEAR OLD "YOUNG MAN" TO GO OFF WITH A VERY TIGHT AND CLOSE MONITORING PROCESS IN HAND..IF HE FELL IN THE WATER, SOMEONE WOULD BE THERE QUICK, TO PULL HIM OUT, RIGHT?..

Wasn’t privy to the article but reading the posts, it’s kids like these that grow up and change the world. Atta boy – fair skies and good weather to you.

ANY KID CAN SAIL OUT TO SEA, ONCE HE ACCOMPLISHES THE VOYAGE, THEN HE WILL BECOME SPECIAL..
