Doesn't make any freaking difference who the driver was! The gates were down, lights were flashing, bells were ringing, the train horn was blaring! That means you don't go driving around the gates! Duh! It ain't rocket science no matter who you are! Only one person responsible here and that is of course the driver of the SUV! The family is in denial, claiming the gates were not down and/or the train was speeding. Video, an event recorder on the train and witnesses at the scene tell a different story. Can you smell a lawsuit coming? I suspect scumbag ambulance chasing lawyers are already sending the family flowers and pestering them with phone calls. Look this was a tragic event and I totally sympathize with the innocent dead and their survivors. They had nothing to do with the irresponsible and stupid action of one of their kin who directly caused all this carnage. This tragedy will be with them for the rest of their lives. Trying to imply that it's RT's fault or saying it would be be different if it was a cop driver is absolute nonsense! The facts speak for themselves even if some people are in denial or delusional! A lesson to be learned here is DRIVE SAFELY people! When the crossing gates are down, don't risk your life to save a few seconds! This same tragic conclusion could also have been caused by a driver who runs a stop sign or red light! Slow down, drive safely and intelligently...and live! Condolences to the family and friends of the innocent victims here, Rest in Peace to the deceased! Sad!!!

Yeah that Les Paul dude sounds like a real jerk, probably pissed because he got too many speeding tickets or spent some time in the slammer! A real chip on his shoulder! In other words he's an a-hole! Article in the Sacramento Bee this morning regarding this Sacramento incident. The gates had apparently been down for 7 1/2 minutes due to the passage of 2 Union Pacific freight trains. There are 4 tracks at that location, 2 for UP and 2 for light rail, it's a grade crossing for both systems. Freight trains can be as long as 150 cars long, move slow in urban areas and can seem to take forever to clear a crossing. By the time the second freight train cleared the crossing the light rail train was approaching and had activated the system so the gate stayed down as it should have. Admittedly that long of time sitting there leads to great frustration. I know damn well I'd be frustrated myself and tempted to run around the gate. I also know I shouldn't! This tragic incident just proves that we all should control our frustration though. It just isn't worth taking the risk of attempting to challenge a piece of very heavy moving equipment folks! Your SUV is going to be like a crushed Coke can if you get hit by a train! This gentleman wasn't the first to illustrate that fact of life and unfortunately he won't be the last. Attempts to "beat the train" are quite common here and throughout the United States. California leads the way in fatal train-vehicle collisions, most of them caused by motorists running around the gates or not stopping at crossings where there are no gates. Most people actually make it across but for the unfortunate few the sight of the train bearing down on them is the last thing they ever see in their lives.
