Are you objecting to change? What are you a Nazi or a Republican. I'll bet you voted for George W. Bush. Haven't you heard about all the wonderful things the ARB has done in California.

They have a big office in Santa Barbara that is well blown out by sea breezes every day, but the AFB office employs 93 Ph.D. scientists who are running around the county looking for pollution. They have only found a small amount of SMOG at two locations: The Rincon where the Route 101 enters from Ventura County and at the Gaviota Pass where it leaves the county. They got all excited and thought they were going to have erect giant fans or some such, but when years of studies had been done for millions of Dollars they had found that the smog was caused by pine trees growing at those two locations. When we expected they would recommend they be cut down the nimble-noggins all got very quiet. They moved on to looking for benzine in soft drink bottles as they used to be cleaned for reuse with benzine, a known carcinogen. But, they couldn't find any bottles as they were no longer used since cans and plastic containers were in vogue. It took them two years to find that out.

Just a little taste of socialism and all its' joys, free stuff, high taxes, deficits, collapse and violence in the streets by October.

a modified older car does increase smog substantialy.an out of tune car does so as well. cars from the 90s to present emit very low emmisions.i know because i did ca. smog checks in napa fo 14 years.its not only what comes out of the tailpipe its also evaperating fuel and crankcase fumes.remember when you could smell a gas station a block away? now you cant because the pumps have vapor recovery sytems.the first heavily smogged cars were from the late 70s and most all of the 80s.those cars were a complete failure to control smog. and as a matter of fact 99% of them fail a smog check every time they test them. anyway 1975 and older cars were exempt when i left middletown in 2004 so the old car owners have nothing to fear, other than what they do in controlled countys wich is roadside spot inspections [like dui check point] and remote sensors that measure emmisions from a passing car and if above allowable standards takes a snap shot of your lic. plate so they can mail you an order to appear at a state referee station or a test only garage.it will cost you some money and will have to go to santa rosa or napa to get it done.if it fails then you got to have it fixed and go get the test again.problem with that is on the 70s/80s cars is the shop fixing it better be good or i will guaranty it will fail again or wont run good enough to get to the test station.

WAIT!
Your telling me that in certain Counties, they have a unit that measures the output of your tailpipe (as you pass by), snaps a picture of your license plate and sends you an order to repair/meet standards!!??
Please elaborate!

This is a crock! As a small business owner, I am faced with some tough decisions here in near future. All 07 and older diesel trucks above 15,000 GVW will need to be retrofitted or repowered. A retrofit costs between 10 and 30 thousand dollars. A repower averages 65 thousand. Every single truck coming into this state will be required to comply. Semi's will stop at the state line, unhook their trailers, and leave. The cost of goods will skyrocket. Needless to say, most small business owners cannot afford new trucks, certainly not in these times. It would be nice if CARB did more than justify their own existence, and offered a clean and affordable alternative.

Don't vote R or D - we already have enough noxious gas bags in CA.

But yet again I am confused - I keep getting told I am a liberal - yet that almost restored '72 El Camino SS still has my name on it. And a 4:10 posi. And if you try to steal it I will shoot you. Yet another conundrum for this 'liberal'.

I object to the fact that the money received from the smog fees will most likely go straight to Sacramento instead of staying in Lake County. We already have the highest unemployment rate in the region. What about the people with an older car that's paid for, on a fixed income, unemployment or welfare? Suddenly they can't drive their cars or kids around? Yes we have a bus system, but PLEASE....it takes hours to get some place it only takes minutes to get to in a car. So the people who have jobs and rely on their older car can't get to them and unemployment goes up. Sure the jerks in Sacramento will say something like "it will bring jobs to Lake County". I agree that auto repair shops will now need certified smog technicians, but really how many of the auto repair shops can afford to buy the equipment necessary to do the smog checks. With credit being tight many of the smaller shops won't be able to invest the capital. You'll only have a few larger auto dealerships that could and really how many people can they hire, ten? I keep saying this all the time, when things pick up then let's talk about changes. Right now Lake County doesn't need more people unemployed and junk cars sitting on front lawns.

I am reading some strange responses from folks.

"slick" Yes, I think the vapor recovery is a good thing. However the CARB smog laws are oppressive to say the least. It is a money maker for someone. Period.

If you want to drive a prius, go for it. However don't force that dogma on the rest of us. California's economy has failed. There needs to be some standards, however let's get real.

No offshore drilling? Why?

Go out and finance some electric car and trade in my good running older car? Fascism with a smile and a handshake...

You can't put a header and an intake on an older import? why? What is the justification? Big brother at it's finest.

California, you need to start thinking for yourself.

The guy who came up with the idea of regulating diesel particulate emissions was found last year to have a fraudulent PhD. Did this change anyone's mind on CARB about his findings?

no it didnt as of now 1998 and newer light diesels are required to have smog checks.also a test called a snap test is required in some areas. that test is way out of bounds.the smog checker snaps the throttle wide open then releases.any visible smoke of any kind and you fail.
i found this out on gov web site while looking for this new rule for lake county which i didnt find, no mention of anything other than business as usuall.

you can put a header on any pre 1976 vehichle because it wont be required to be tested every two years.only when you sell it will it be tested for change of ownership.it will still be illegal to modify the emmisions on any car that is 1966 or newer. and some cops do make you open your hood and if they THINK you are modified, off to the referee you go. it happened to two of my friends in napa and multiple kids with hondas etc in middletown.i actually even saw one cop looking under the kids hood.i was working at obriens and sons in middletown and alot of kids were coming in there asking how much to return car to stock because of being pulled over.

CARB ... The very same people that killed the electric car, backing the "Hydrogen highway" instead... Well the Hydrogen was a pipedream.(It would take 1 tanker to fill 6 cars)
Now many years later guess what... Maybe the electric car could work!??
Electric vehicles can go 50miles on $1.50 worth of electricity!(@.20cents a kwh)
NO war required!
NO oil slick required!
Charge for free with solar panels!
No air pollution!
Costs almost nothing to upkeep!
Wake up ... and buy electric!
I've driven a 1981 escort for years now (Factory jet electric with a ford escort body)
Factory PLUG IN electric from almost 30 years ago!(NO SMOG REQUIRED)

And where do you suppose the electricity comes from to power your car? So what you are telling us is you are in favor of coal fired power plants? And please don't try to trot out your tired old "solar" argument. You know as well as the rest of us that solar is no where near a viable alternative to fossil fuels. Nuclear?

What I don't understand is what makes Lake County so special that the author thinks that we should not have to smog our cars when most of the state has had to for years.

Is he against all smog testing or just testing his cars?
