We should have a banner over the entrance to every US labor and delivery ward informing the mothers that circumcision cuts the risk of contracting HIV in half. No one is talking to expectant parents about this for fear of offending those who, for whatever reason, are opposed to circumcision.

The flaws in the research are manifold:

* Not double-blinded
* Not placebo-controlled
* Significant drop-out rate - 5 times as many as were infected
* Non-sexual transmission ignored
* Non-identical treatment of controls and experimental group
* One of the three trials used a method that removed significantly less tissue than the others, yet the "protection" was the same.

In several African countries, the HIV rate is higher among circumcised men than non-circumcised, according to the National Demographic and Health Surveys.

Something very funny is going on.

And even if the findings were accurate, the female-to-male HIV transmission rate in the US is so low, and such a small part of the transmission picture, that thousands of circumcisions would be wasted for every one that prevented a transmission.

There is all these campaigns against female genital mutilation, yet we allow this practice to go on completely unquestioned. I'm not saying I agree or disagree with circumcision, it is just interesting how there is no uproar about it from any groups

The circumcision cuts Aids argument is crap. Are you using a condom? No? Then your risk of contracting any sexual transmitted disease goes way up.

Circumcision is a solution looking for a problem.

Why isn't Higganum Ct asking for female circumcison in the US, another genital mutilation said to halve the chance of catching HIV? Why is it not important that male genital mutilation (circumcsion) increases the risk of the female partner getting HIV. Also, in UK and US, no HIV reducing effect has been found. It is either different in Africa or the pro circ people that did the study fudged the data (they lost so many participants -- about half so fudging was easy).

Ok so if the pro circ Africa studies can be counted on, instead of 3.3 bullets in your 100 chambers of a gun you place in 1.8. Is Higganum, CT going to put that gun to his head in the later case but not the former? I think either way the person is crazy to take that risk.

Use condoms or have sex with only one HIV free partner. That will fight HIV.

Schenker could circumcise 32 men in a day. If the African studes were not fatally flawed, their results indicate it would take about that many circumcisions to prevent ONE transmission of HIV. A surgeon working for a day could save several lives doing real surgery. A non-surgeon could save dozens by educating people in real HIV-prevention measures.

The Arab world accuses us Jews of spreading the AIDS virus!! So, if you read that somewhere, just remember this article.

Millions and millions of Jewish men have been circumcized for thousands of years with no ill affects. Female - so-called - circumcision is done in order to minimize sexual feeling in women. It is a form of oppression against women. And it is usually done in the most primitive of conditions. And done by women with no medical training. Mohelim - circumcizers - are professionals who have been trained in this. Passing laws against circumcision is another form of anti-Semitism.

If you are a pediatrician then you should specify which circumcision you are referring to. Female or male? If you are for female circumcision, you are no pediatrician.

"Female Circumcision" (i.e., FGM) is routinely condemned because it is more analogous to castration than circumcision.

However you should know that there is ongoing passionate controversy over (male) circumcision, with anti- and pro- groups constantly throwing accusations at each other.

I, for one, don't think this controversy is worth the ink spilled over it - the risks and benefits of circumcision being both so minor that the subject really doesn't warrant wasting time debating.

If someone just says "circumcision" you can be sure that they're referring to the male variety - which is the only real circumcision there is.

But there is a real campaign by Muslims to compare the two procedures. That is why it must be clearly defined. Even on forums for anthropologists I have seen this term confused. And these people are supposed to be educated. I like the term you used "female castration". I think we should use that term.

Sometimes it is important to debate a small item before something like mandatory circumcision gains momentum.
