The 2 Australian girls were actually caned in Malaysia on 26th August 2009, incase anyone wants to read up on it on the web. However, unfortunately you are wrong about caning in Singapore. Judicial caning via the courts, is, as you say, reserved for adult males under 50yrs of age. Caning of males is also legal & prevalent within the Singapore armed forces. Girls under the age of 14, CAN be caned legally, by both school authorities & their parents. Full details of Singapore's corporal punishment laws can be read on both GOOGLE & WIKIPEDIA. It is certainly very good news if it turns out this girl is released, by i have my doubts. Even if she is, the supporters of the accused Imam are already saying she will be stoned if released, along with other death threats. It sounds like there is a feudal war going on over there between Muslims & Christians, & if this girl is released, she really needs to be placed in an Embassy of a friendly nation, & granted safe asylum. They are all Insane.

Jinnah's vision was abandoned promptly after independence and Zia Ul Huq, with the help of Saudis used the only things going for the most Pakistanis (religion, and so Kashmir!) to justify his military dictatorship. Pakistan needs someone like Ataturk!

Sounds similar to what we had in schools in the UK before it was abolished, & is now being debated to bring it back, with, as you say, parental consent. Thing is, i can remember, if parents didnt consent, the kids were kicked out of the school, so consent was always given. Anyway, thats just normal discipline isnt it, & certainly NOT what this poor girl was or is, facing. Something still seems wrong though, because listening to TV reports, the courts have still not released her, & do not seem willing to drop either the charges or the sentence. I still have this horrible feeling, that they will charge this Imam, but also carry out the sentence on this girl, so as to keep both Muslims & christians calm. I hope i am wrong but i fear the worst for her.

Kemal Ataturk was perhaps the only reformer in Islam,who created a special role for the Turkish Army to SAFEGUARD SECULARISM.
That would not be necessary if the POPULATION WILLINGLY ACCEPTED SECULARISM.
How many armies in secular countries have armies acting as a guardian against theology?
