Nobel winner slams Bible as 'handbook of bad morals'

Full story: rawstory.com

A row broke out in Portugal on Monday after a Nobel Prize-winning author denounced the Bible as a "handbook of bad morals". Speaking at the launch of his new book "Cain", Jose Saramago, who won the 1998 Nobel Prize for Literature, said society would probably be better off without the Bible.

"Saramago does not know the Bible".

"He has only superficial understanding of it".

"The Bible is a manual of bad morals (which) has a powerful influence on our culture and even our way of life. Without the Bible, we would be different, and probably better people," ...

The Bible teaches that those who continue to rebel against the LORD will be cast into a Lake of Fire.

The bible also teaches an earth mounted on pillars, a solid sky dome, a talking snake and a talking donkey...not to mention incest, genocide and patricide patricide. It also teaches against wearing mixed fabrics, sowing different crops in the same field and keeping different types of cattle in the same field. In other words it teaches nonsense.

G.K. Chesterton wasn't too bright I guess. Here, let's fix his moron talk so it makes some sense.

If there were no people that assert god exists without any evidence whatsoever to suggest that he/she/it does, and if none of those credulous kooks tried to impose their wacko beliefs on the rest of society, there would be no atheists.

actually if there were no believers, there would be no need for atheists. its always the believers we resist.

if your god would just make a showing, we could get past the nonsense of believers...

The bible has nothing to do with morality. There were humans on the planet for thousands of years prior to Christianity. They had laws and did not kill each other off. The reason they were able to do this is because morality has it's roots in evolution.

they had laws and did not kill each other off? what planet are you speaking of? and by the way, is "patricide patricide" anything like "genocide genocide"?

the God of abraham shows himself every day to those with eyes to see and ears to hear...

The Code of Hammurbari.

Then there is the small matter of medicine, mathematics, logic, running water, underfloor heating, flush toilets, science, building skills etc. All without the help of the 'morality' of the bible.

As for my typo, so what? IMHO your picking on this is somewhat childish.

Hey folks, first - the books are works of fiction. Second, the author is free to think whatever he wants about the bible, right? Or are the fundies pushing for thought-crime, too, now?

more silliness. are you telling us that asking for proof is a new invention? do you realize (probably not) there were atheists way older than when the J-man was alleged to have lived?? 6th cent BCE we see the first rejections of myth based explanations of the world.

guessing that youre a believer, didnt you have your proof criteria met? didnt other bleivers youknow have their criteria met too? wont many others claim the same ???

not my problem if your criteria is so shallow, and some of us demand more'n the bible, or the claims of those like you. If mine are met, as yours/others were met, I'll join that gods army. till than Im going to live a moral life without the silliness of your book. and certainly without the bible based rules of a mixed up bunch like xtians.

Light Sensitive: I'll say you have some very wise arguements! You have them down on the floor! But how do I know what morals are in a non judeo-christian world?

Daily Horoscope for December 26

Scorpio

Something that you've always taken for granted or believed implicitly could have a big question mark hanging over it during the next few weeks. The more entrenched your views are about this, the more difficult it will be to accept that perhaps it's time for a change of opinion or, at the very least, a revaluation of what you think. Mercury turns retro in your house of communications, so do your best to be open-minded now.
