I just want to point out...

People who don't "believe" or "understand" WHAT and WHO the Eucharist is, should NOT receive Him.

Even Catholics that are NOT in a "state of Grace" are NOT supposed to receive the Eucharist.

He is very special, and to be treated as such...

Well stated, Hamburg. The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Catholic faith. More Christians need to take it seriously, especially Catholics.

I agree with all you said.

"He (St. Paul) threatens, moreover, the stubborn and forward and denounces them, saying 'Whosoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily is guilty of the Body and Blood of the Lord'(1 Corinthians 11:27). All these warnings being scorned and condemned (lapsed Christians will often take Communion) before their sin is expiated, before confession has been made of their crime, before their conscience has been purged by sacrifice and by the hand of the priest, before the offense of an angry and threatening Lord has been appeased,(and so) violence is done to His Body and Blood; and they sin now against their Lord more with their hand and mouth than when they denied the Lord." St. Cyprian of Carthage ("The Lapsed," 251 A.D.)

If I've done something wrong, and don't feel "holy" enough, even I would not take the Eucharist.
And, I always receive on my tongue, because, my own feeling is that my hands are not pure enough to touch Him.
It's bad enough He has to go in via tongue. Think of all the bad things people say to each other. He deserves better...

Good comments, I think we need to help people understand what the Eucharist is and how important it is. The lines for confession should be a lot longer on Saturdays

(1 Corinthians 11:27) Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink [this] cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.

(1 Corinthians 11:28) But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of [that] bread, and drink of [that] cup.

(1 Corinthians 11:29) For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.

HOLY ENOUGH? Well brother, no matter what a person has done in their past, that day, if you recieve the Eucharist properly, Examining yourself as Paul instructs, you are confessing and recognizing you are NOT righteous EVER before God, but in Jesus Christ, because only Christ is Holy, and HE will claim us as His own, we will NOT be judged because CHrist died to save us from the penalties of the LAW.

I am always reluctant to call someone a "devout Catholic" because I am not sure of anyone's devoutness. I don't want anyone to refer to me as a "devout Catholic" because I am a sinner who needs the sacrament of Penance from time to time. I voted in the poll that only Catholics should be able to receive communion, but by that I meant Catholics who were in a state of grace at the time of reception of Communion. That doesn't necessarily mean that they should be labeld as "devout Catholics."
