A Catholic priest has been barred from performing mass for Charleston County jail inmates for refusing to use grape juice instead of wine in the sacrament.

I knew the Monsignor a few years ago and he seemed like a decent chap. I wonder what the jail's policy is toward other religion's wine usage?

Judged: 4 4 3 You are missing the point. The priest only needs a visible quantity (less than a shot worth) for Mass. Only the priest need consume it. Mass is invalid without it and it has been allowed in the past. So it is not what the priest refuses to do but rather what cannot be done without at least a tiny quantity of wine. |
alcohol is contraband in prison any visible quantity is not allowed. If the crooks want to have mass with wine they should not have gotten convicted of a crime that put them in prison. The priest can consume the wine before he enters the prison boundary if it is that important. |

Judged: 4 4 4 It is not possible to do it that way. The bread and wine must be consecrated together. It is not the end of the world either way. However, to a Catholic the Liturgy of the Mass is the most important prayer. These men, a small percentage of them certainly innocent, may be seeking to rehabilitate their lives before reentering society. From a Catholic point of view grace is given in the reception of communion and the prayers of the Mass (among other things). I believe it is a good thing for these men (or women) to participate in Mass. I am sure exceptions can be made. I've seen it done in max security prisons for more dangerous things. |
