Indonesia: Ministry Orders Removal of Buddha Statue

Full story: Global Voices Online

Indonesia's commitment to promote religious tolerance was questioned again after the Religious Affairs Ministry has ordered a large Buddhist statue in a Buddhist monastery "Tri Ratna" in Tanjungbalai in North Sumatra to be taken down after some 'hardliners' in the area complained against its presence.

Islam should be declared a mental illness and banned.

When the founder was a madman, how should the followers be?

The "Kitab al-Tabaqat al-Kabir",(Book of the Major Classes), by Ibn Sa'd, translated by S. Moinal Haq,[4], page 225 has Muhammad saying:

"O Khadija, I see light and hear sounds and I fear I am mad".

The visitations from the spirit continued. Then they stopped for a time believed to have been from 6 months to 3 years. When this happened, Tabari,[5], volume 6 page 76, records:

"The inspiration ceased to come to the messenger of God for a while, and he was deeply grieved. He began to go to the tops of mountain crags, in order to fling himself from them; but every time he reached the summit of a mountain, Gabriel appeared to him and said to him, "You are the Prophet of God." Thereupon his anxiety would subside and he would come back to himself."

Also, from Tabari Vol. 9, page 167, note 1151 says:

"The pre-Islamic Arabs believed in the demon of poetry, and they thought that a great poet was directly inspired by demons...."

This explains why Muhammad thought he was demon possessed, or influenced by demons; the Quran in many places reads like typical Arabic poetry.

people who protest, they are more worldly than religiously Buddhist.

The Buddha didn't call for any symbols to represent him. If it wasn't there at the first place, none of these nonsense would have happened.

the Buddhists of 'little faith' get hurt when they see their symbol of 'great attachment' to the Buddha gets pulled down.

the Moslems of 'great faith' got hurt when they see a giant idol in the midst of a moslem majority city.

Buddhists should, as examplified by the Buddha in many Jatakas, sacrifice their pride for the sake of others' peace of mind.

remember Vakkali Sutta?

Vakkali said :

"For a long time, Lord, I have wanted to come and set eyes on the Blessed One, but I had not the strength in this body to come and see the Blessed One."

The Buddha retorted :

"Enough, Vakkali! What is there to see in this vile body? He who sees Dhamma, Vakkali, sees me; he who sees me sees Dhamma. Truly seeing Dhamma, one sees me; seeing me one sees Dhamma."

the same applies with regards to the Buddha rupa (Buddha image).

Buddha statues represent the teachings--As valuable to remind people of true teachings as Dhamma books.

A Buddhist should use this opportunity to discuss the true teachings.

Buddhism is a beacon of light in the darkness of Abrahamic nonsense!

dan bagi komentar saudara, yaitu "Indonesia's 1st religion is Buddha"...sorry,i think you've got your facts wrong.Indonesia was tribal religion + Hinduism first. Buddhism came in much later. Before Candi Borobudur..there were other Hindu Candis first.

Pre-Candi Borobudur form of Hinduism still exist today especially in Bali, though I dare not say it's in its most prestine form. In other parts of Indonesia,it has become Parmalim, Kaharingan and perhaps the latest syncretism,it has become Kejawen.

Removal of Buddha Statue
I agree with Sampuna's view. Think about Buddha's toleration.
When Buddha was alive, what kind of action He responded if someone assaulted Buddha?

How did the Buddha respond when He was being criticized and challenged?

Once when the Buddha was staying at Rajagaha, the Brahman Akkosa Bharadvaja abused and criticized him in foul and harsh words. Thus reviled, the Buddha asked: "Well, Brahman, do friends, confidants, relatives, kinsmen and guests visit you?"

"Yes, Gautama, sometimes friends, confidants, relatives, kinsmen and guests do visit me." "Well, Brahman, do you not offer them snacks or food or titbits?"

"Yes, Gautama, sometimes I do offer them snacks or food or titbits."

"But if, Brahman, they do not accept it, who gets it?"

"If Gotama, they do not accept it, I get it back."

"Even so, Brahman, you are abusing us who do not abuse, you are angry with us who do not get angry, you are quarreling with us who do not quarrel. All this of yours we don't accept. You alone, Brahman, get it back; all this, Brahman, belongs to you."

On another occasion at Kapilavatthu, the Buddha was questioned by Dandapani the Sakyan about his teachings. Unimpressed by the Buddha's answer, Dandapani shook his head and wagging his tongue departed. Reacting calmly to this, the Buddha addressed the gathering: "If anyone should criticise me, the Dhamma or the Sangha, you should not on that account be angry, resentful or upset. For if you were, that would hinder you, and you would be unable to know whether they said right or wrong, would you? So, if others criticise me, the Dhamma or the Sangha, then simply explain what is incorrect."

Following the Buddha's example, we should not become angry or engaged in mud-slinging when the Dhamma is criticized. Rather we should act with restrain and respond rationally and intelligently, and rectify any false representations of the Buddha's teachings. This duty to protect the Dhamma is entrusted by the Buddha to all his followers. It is not enough just to chant and conduct rituals; it is imperative that we study the Dhamma, live by the Dhamma, and are able to protect the Dhamma.

Once, Burmese BBC broadcast section asked a Burmese Buddhist monk lived in England about Taliban destroying Buddha Statues. The monk requested Buddhists to patience.

We must feel indifference on any such things like removal or destroying of Buddha Statue.
Such issue is not joyful situation. But Buddhists shouldn't get angry in order to follow Buddha's examples.

If your practice of Buddhism offends the majority Muslims, than to appease them should you recommend conversion to make Muslims happy?

kalau history sejarah Indonesia 'tertulis agama pertama di Indonesia adalah Budha, kemudian hindu dan selanjatnya moeslim dan kristen. jadi borobudur adalah candi budha pada masa kerajaan majapahit.

How can my practice of Buddhism offend the majority Muslims??
When I generate loving-kindness for the welfare of all beings, does it offend the Muslims?
Does meditation offend the Muslims?
Buddhanussati do not blame Islam and Muslims.

Conversion to Islam to make Muslims happy is not my choice.
I am proud of being what I am, a Buddhist.
I don't care if my being Buddhist and my practice of Buddhism offend Muslims. Actually, I have no intention to offend Muslims.
If Muslims think my practice of Buddhism offends them, it is their own view. True or false I don't want to judge.

What can I do if someone is angry of me even though I do not make him angry?
A Muslim friend of mine once said to me that if his brother or sister converts to other faith from Islam, he will kill him or her.
Islam and Muslims are quick to anger.
If Muslims are angry instead of forgive, it's up to them.

Buddhists are taught to forgive instead of being angry. This way is teaching of Buddha's Dhamma.

Hatinya jangan gusar.
