Only idiots who don't understand science claim it isn't real. And this is because they have likely been brainwashed by ignorant creationist propoganda, the likes of which they cannot stop posting (its part of the disease of faith). People who believe in these cults have to constantly lie to themselves and others to be part of their cult. It's a normal reaction finding out that your beliefs are false and wrong. Some people can deal with it, but others become godbots and have to spread propoganda and lies at every opportunity (part of the psychosis). This is why it is regarded as a mental illness.

I had a very exciting thought last night; maybe it’s been brought up before, I don’t know.“Is it likely that the intense religious faith found in the bible belt is environmental? So after I’d done my shopping and housework this morning I fired up my computer and did a little research which culminated in a search for “limestone areas of the usa” Hidden among various small scale studies I came up with http://go.owu.edu/~jbkrygie/krygier_html/geog... A geo survey map of limestone deposits across the USA and http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/bio203/s2012/blazel_m... Sage producing areas in the US, Sage is a plant that thrives on limestone. A search for “US bible belt” gives you any number of similar results. They coincide with the limestone areas so yes there does seem to be a correlation between the geological makeup of an areas and intense religious belief. The environmental effect comes when you consider that limestone and “acid” rain (even very mild concentrations) reacts to give off CO2. A search for acid rain areas of the USA gives you http://www.nature.nps.gov/air/edu/lessons/fig... The National Parks service acid rain map And a page on which Figure 16.shows Regions of sensitivity to acid rain in the United States http://www.globalchange.umich.edu/globalchang... Is it possible that long term exposure to higher levels of CO2 can cause intense religious experiences? CO2 poisoning affects the body in the same way that claimed religious experiences do. Some of the more likely symptoms to produce such feelings are:- Reduced neural activity Lethargy Elevated rate of cardiac output Irregular heartbeat Panic Convulsions Hallucinations Seizures Memory problems Changes in vision A further search for “can CO2 cause intense religious experiences” And there you have it, yes, it’s been looked into scientifically that CO2 can and does cause religious experiences, god experiences and sensations of ecstasy. Conclusion: This is obviously not a scientific study, but it is possible that the numerous god experiences of the bible belt are down to poisoning caused by the environmental conditions.

Ben Franklin wrote a pamphlet called, "Information to Those who would Remove to America." It was intended to be a guide for Europeans who were thinking of relocating in America. In it he said:
"Hence bad examples to youth are more rare in America, which must be comfortable consideration to parents. To this may be truly added, that serious religion, under its various denominations, is not only tolerated, but respected and practiced.
"Atheism is unknown there; Infidelity rare and secret; so that persons may live to a great age in that country without having their piety shocked by meeting with either an Atheist or an Infidel.
"And the Divine Being seems to have manifested his approbation of the mutual forbearance and kindness with which the different sects treat each other; by the remarkable prosperity with which he has been pleased to favor the whole country."

John Quincy Adams "Duty is ours; results are God's."
September, 1811, in a letter to his son:
"I have myself, for many years, made it a practice to read through the Bible once ever year.... My custom is, to read four to five chapters every morning immediately after rising from my bed. I employs about an hour of my time...."
July 4, 1821
"The highest glory of the American Revolution was this; it connected in one indissoluble bond the principles of civil government with the principles of Christianity.
