"Pascal asks the reader to analyze the position of mankind, this crisis of existence and lack of complete understanding. While Mankind can discern a great deal through reason, it is also hopelessly removed from knowing everything through it. He describes Mankind as a finite being trapped within an incomprehensible infinity. Thrust into being from non-being for a brief life only to go out again, with no explanation whatsoever of "Why?" or "What?" or "How?". The finite nature of our being constrains reason with respect to every form of knowledge. Now, assuming that reason alone cannot determine whether or not God exists, the ontological question is reduced to a coin toss. However, making a choice to live as though God exists or does not exist is unavoidable even if the ontological question is inconclusive. In Pascal's assessment, participation in this Wager is not optional because Mankind is already thrust into existence. So even if God's existence cannot be independently confirmed or denied, nevertheless the Wager is necessary and the possible scenarios must be considered and decided upon pragmatically."
Maybe in Pascal's time it was a coin toss. vanity vanity all is vanity

I wonder what he would think were he alive today?

From "God does not play dice with the universe." to

" God not only plays dice with the universe, He also hides the dice." to

"God is not necessary for creation."

When you stare into the abyss the abyss stares back at you.

I see no change in what Pascal observed. Bet one way and win eternity or nothing; bet the wrong way and face hell.

Religious people should help the local deprived citizens around the corner and not waste their time with pious prayer ceremony.
comrades try to convert me to your religious way of life- if you can
What makes you think religious people don't do both...pray AND help those who need help. Most of them do both.

Both rational non-belivers and pious religious fans do their best to ameliorate the life of the depressed and suppressed and oppressed citizens a need based minimum luxury.
It is not a problem

"The magnitude of pleasure reaches its limit in the removal of all pain. When such pleasure is present, so long as it is uninterrupted, there is no pain either of body or of mind or of both together."

He need only look at the order of nuns that Mother Teresa set up in India, 6000 sisters helping the poorest of the poor. Right under his nose.

I inadvertantly responded your question before i read your post.
Yes each and every civilized citizen wish to die without regrets and animosity or aggressive outlook .

I see the real nonsense around my society
Do some good and expose the sucking civilized barbaric animal life.

Hello

I was wondering what Pascal would think, if alive today, in the company of Hawkings, Dawkings, etal and in the light of present day science.

We already know what you think.

Thanks

It is not my intention to uphold any ideals or dreams nor to oppose any blind faith.
It is my intention to expose my ignorance and put the real life with critical comments..
My wife is a religious Christian and help the needy without any critical thoughts.
I an Atheist do the same with critical views.
Life is too short to waste our time with prayers

Are you afraid of the truth? You really meant to type Islamreality.
Spending three years in prison and awaiting death for being a Christian is reality.
Apart from spending three years in jail, and being given an alternative chance of revoking the death punishment if he reconverts to Islam, this Pastor stood firm on his Faith on Jesus and Christianity. He is the real Christian.Prayers for his release were said in every nook and corner of the sane world.\ofcourde- there is wonder working Power in the Christian prayer.

Well, howdy!

Pascal lived at the same time as Newton and Galileo, certainly men who were as far out of the box as Hawkings, Brian Greene, and Lisa Randall. That did not affect his theory any more than those more recent folks would. There is no way to test Pascal's wager, nor can one test brane and string theory. In the end that is what Pascal was saying, you were born so the bet has been made. It is just a think piece, not a religion any more than today's theoretical physics is.

You have no idea what I think.

You're welcome.

People like Theresa and Jesus love big government! To sake humanity, keeping tax low, protecting freedom ..... shrink the size of government is much more important than helping the poor.

Certainly, Iranians should pray to Holy Virgin Maria to ask God for peace. Pray to God for sending Holy Spirit ( He gives Courage, Strength and Victory ) to them and pray to God for protection of their country and nation from wars, natural disasters and another bad events.

praying doesn't change a thing, it's a self-bluff.
