By selecting Paul Ryan as his running mate on Saturday, Mitt Romney did something that Walter Mondale, Bob Dole, Al Gore, and John McCain did in previous presidential contests: They used their VP pick to try to shake things up.

Trailing in the summer, they chose a running mate -- be it Geraldine Ferraro, Jack Kemp, Joe Lieberman, or Sarah Palin -- to change the fundamentals of the race.

These picks all worked in the short run, but only once (with Lieberman) did it serve its purpose for the rest of the campaign.(Gore, after all, was able to battle back to where he actually won the popular vote.)

So how will this play out for Romney? By picking Ryan, he made the calculation that he needed to pick someone to help redefine himself, first and foremost. The move also serves to fire up conservatives, give the GOP ticket a jolt of youthful energy, and make the case he now stands for something big.

But it also wasn’t the kind of VP selection we saw from George W. Bush in 2000 or Barack Obama in 2008 that essentially said:“I’ve got this thing.” Instead, by picking Ryan, Romney said:“I need some help.”

Exactly. This was a move of desperation by a campaign that knows it's losing.

Obama Documentary Featuring President's Half Brother Opens Big at Box Office (Exclusive)

Sources say some moviegoers sat in the aisles Thursday and waited as much as 90 minutes to meet D’Souza and Gerald Molen, one of the Oscar-winning producers of Schindler’s List, who was a co-producer of 2016 along with Doug Sain.

For some of its regular showings during the weekend, the theater offered 2016 on multiple screens, including three sold-out auditoriums for the 7 p.m. Friday showing.

It's interesting that you're saying this now after your many bold assertions that Romney will beat Obama and you'll be here to rub it in my face. Sounds like you aren't feeling so confident anymore.
It's also interesting that you don't have any response to my reply to your pasted list of Ryan attributes. Though I'm not surprised.
Quite the opposite, I am sure Romney will win, I just don't know it for a fact, no one does.

I think Romney made a brilliant move by picking Ryan. Romney didn't become successful because he's stupid. I bet he's a great chess player.

As far as not answering your questions. Well I think a none answer should tell you I disagree and what's the point of telling you. I won't change your mind and you won't change mine...so why waste time about it.

Now here's my plan...it's a beautiful summer day and I'm going to enjoy it.

More of the kind of perceptive, serious coverage we've come to expect from Politico:

Forget the budget: Paul Ryan is hot!

Some equally serious media outlets spent a lot of time analyzing how hot they thought Sarah Palin was too.

Unfortunately, as Caribou Barbi proved, that's completely irrelevant to anything that matters about running this country.

1. Of course you think it was brilliant - you are who he was trying to please with his choice. I've explained why Ryan's not going to help with anyone other than people who wouldn't vote for Obama anyway. Do you have any evidence that anyone else will be persuaded by Ryan?

2. A "none" answer tells me you aren't able to refute my points.

3. I'm not trying to change your mind. I'm just trying to get you to think logically based on objective facts instead of forming your opinions based on your emotions.

4. Enjoy your day. Maybe when you come back you should stick to the dining thread.

"There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged.

One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world.

The other, of course, involves orcs."

There are a few people directing others to polls, please check the date of those polls and understand that some of those poll were over a week old and NONE before Saturday. It appears that it's an attempt to put out false or misleading information to make it look as if Obama is gaining ground. Typically this is a tactic of the far left. Personally I just see it as a lie no matter what party puts it up, it's dishonest either way.
Also Obama is losing ground in Iowa and Wisconsin.

WHAT IS OBAMA AND HOLDER HIDING? THIS WOULD GO AWAY IF THEY WOULD JUST RELEASE THE DOCUMENTS. THEY NEED TO DO IT PRIOR TO THE ELECTION NOT AFTER LIKE PLANNED.

House Panel Sues for Release of Gun Documents

By DEVLIN BARRETT, August 13, 2012

A House committee filed a civil suit Monday seeking to force Attorney General Eric Holder to turn over documents related to a bungled gun-trafficking probe called Fast and Furious.

The filing was expected after a House vote in June to hold Mr. Holder in contempt of Congress over the Justice Department's refusal to release certain documents. The agency has turned over more than 7,000 pages related to Fast and Furious, but President Barack Obama invoked executive privilege in refusing to hand over others.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R., Calif.), who as chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has led the congressional investigation of Fast and Furious, said the president exceeded his authority by invoking executive privilege.

"Waiting nearly eight months after the subpoena had been issued to assert a merit-less claim of privilege, the president's decision was a calculated political maneuver designed to stop the release of documents until after November's election," Mr. Issa said in a statement.

The suit, filed in federal court in Washington, D.C., asks a judge to force the Justice Department to release the requested documents, which mostly concern how agency leaders reacted when they learned of Fast and Furious.

The 41-page lawsuit says that if the court accepted the Obama administration's definition of executive privilege, that would "cripple congressional oversight of executive branch agencies, to the very great detriment of the nation and our constitutional structure.''

A Justice Department spokeswoman didn't respond to requests for comment on the lawsuit.

The 2009-2010 Fast and Furious operation, run by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, was aimed at building a case against suspected gun smugglers to Mexico. The agents, using a tactic called gun-walking, allowed suspects to buy about 2,000 firearms without intercepting the weapons.

The ATF's suspected smugglers weren't arrested until after a December 2010 shootout near the Arizona-Mexico border that ended with the death of Brian Terry, a U.S. border agent. One of the guns recovered at the scene was tied to Fast and Furious.

When Congress first began asking questions about possible gun-walking, Justice Department officials said none had taken place. They were later forced to retract that statement, and Mr. Holder has called Fast and Furious "bad law enforcement." The attorney general has said he and senior Justice Department officials weren't aware of the operation until after it was halted.

Really? None of them are BEFORE Saturday? Are you sure?

LMAO! You're intent on making a fool of yourself today, aren't you?

ALL polls we currently have were before Saturday. ALL OF THEM. Nobody has released a poll of the Presidential race that was taken since Saturday.

FYI - your embarrassing inability to comprehend how polling works doesn't make anybody else misleading. LOL!

This is for everyone else. I do not respond to "Dan the Man" postings because he is incapable of any rational debate without condescending remarks, name calling, insults or just trying to "1Up" everyone to make himself feel good. When opposing views happen he will always fall to racial bias, hypocrisy (double standards), false accusation, distortion of the facts, distraction of the main topic, false claims of racism or trying to make people out to be liars to spread his “Truth”. I will not respond to him with anything more than this posting I encourage you to do the same and perhaps we can bring back civility to this forum.

How can you tell when the Nerd here has been embarrassingly defeated in a debate.

She prints this lame post-o-lies again.

Here are the facts:

I was civil to you. I was respectful. I thought we were engaging in legitimate debate.

But when you were unable to dispute my points, you (not me) YOU started the rudeness, personal attacks, and name-calling. I already posted the links where it happened.(posts 30558 & 30625).

You are making these false statements about me because I embarrassed you in legitimate, honest debate. You are running away from me because I proved your arguments were false.

Daily Horoscope for May 18

Gemini

Try as you might, you won't be able to convince a certain person to see things from your point of view. This character is far too busy letting you know that they're an individual in their own right and they won't be tied down by you. The more you push, the more they'll rebel, so try not to incite further displays of outrageousness.
