I was a kid in the '60s, and I had the really small red-ear sliders. They were about the size of a half dollar. We knew about Salmonella way back then.

Any reptile will have Salmonella, and any pet bird may also.

If it's little kids though, you're talking about turtles.

The turtles are not the problem. Care in handling is required.

Really? I mean turtles? c'mon people. I owned a turtle for over 13 years and she recently passed away and I can recall being little holding her and then directly picking my nose afterward and never got sick once. Just wash your hands, seriously people need to start taking personal responsibility for themselves.

we have a turtle now going on for five years, while true turtles are docile, i dont let my children play with him, why? because do you really think the turtle wants to be picked up?

What a stupid article! Common sense would tell anyone they shouldn't leave a small child with a pet turtle (or any pet for that matter). And certainly handwashing is a NO BRAINER! I think it's time this Country stops playing babysitter to the public, and let nature take its course. I agree 100% with the person above in that turtles aren't the problem, it's the idiot parents or nowadays "baby mamas" who don't exercise good hygiene. I had a pet box turtle for years as a child, and never got sick even once! And for God's sake learn ENGLISH!

I would suggest they play with a 100lb alligator snapping turtle,he would bite their hands off and there would be no need to wash them then.

Just keep the hands washed, and you'll be a a-ok. I have a 6 foot male Iguana for 11 years and never got Salmonella.

As with any reptile they require care to different degrees. My pet Iguana requires alot of care.

To make a long story short, he needs a variety of leafy green veg. like Collard Greens or Escarole to name a few, carrots, peas, beans, some fruit.

Iguanas need sunlight for vitamin D. So they need some type of caged enclosure for the outdoors during the warmer months, spring and summer, even fall if its at least a warm 65-70 degrees. For summer make sure there is some shade to retreat to. The winter months he gets a reptile u.v. flourescent light. I also keep his room 80 degrees with a small ceramic heater. Iguanas need warmth to digest their food properly. I place this on top of a partially opened screen top 55 gallon fish tank. He likes to sit up on top of there, Iguanas like heights.

Iguanas are not active, so they don't need a big yard to roam in like a dog, but they do need that feel of extra space. I have mine in his own bedroom. I give him a stretch on occasion to walk around in my closed off living room, never goes in the kitchen.

His room must be clean at all times, if he gets a bacteria
infection he could die. He once did due to my ignorance of not washing his food dish every day in hot water. The vet bill was $700.00 which they made me pay day of service in full, the vet made me get a credit card to make the payments.

Regarding an Iguanas behavior, they are all different. Some are nastier than others, some are tamer. Mine is pretty tame, except when he goes into heat once a year which lasts about 2 months. During the last couple weeks of the heat period he gets very aggressive and territorial. He looks to me as a mate, no joke, my vet told me about this. He whips his tail, may even try to leap at me or even bite. I keep the room cooler to a 70 degrees, this helps, and only go near him to feed him or clean his surroundings.

Theres other things involved in caring for him but I don't think I can fit it all on this post. The reason I'm mentioning all of this is, If you purchase an Iguana or any type of reptile or exotic pet, make sure you know what your getting into. I didn't do the research till later,
and here I am.

I think there should e a ban on all reptiles or exotic pets, they are just being sold to make money. The animal and owner goes through alot of misery, they don't belong in a house, they belong in the wild in their own habitat. But for people like me who aleady have them would get a grand-father clause to keep them.

As much as I luv my pet Iguana I would never want to own one again.

the thing is,that they could ban all these types of pets and they still wouldn't stop salmonella outbreaks, because field mice that uually get into homes in the winter also carry salmonella, under cooked food can give it too you, which the under cooked food you can prevent it,but as for the mice that can get in your home in the winter, unless it is very clear that there is mice dirt in food or the dirt is very visible, you cannot prevent getting salmonella from them.
