Independent Shar-Pei make loyal pets, owners say

GREAT story!
It has been our experience that once you have a Shar-Pei, no other breed will do.
We are currently the pack members of our 4th generation of pups. They are so intelligent, they literally house-break themselves.
A most outstanding breed!

my mother used to raise shar-peis they are truly amazing animals. they are the perfect pet and they realy do become a huge part of your family

Why people would continue supporting breeders (mostly puppy mills around here, too) when there are so MANY adorable homeless, abandoned pups in need of a loving home?

My experience with purebreed Shar-peis is they have pretty bad body odor (due to the skin folds)... BUT, I have a friend with a mix - it's adorable and not stinky.

While it is true the Shar-Pei is very easy to housebreak they are a dominant breed that are very difficult to train. They prefer to be ALPHA and do not listen to less dominant owners - do not listen to children.
They require daily walks and if you have other dogs this truly is vital - without this "pack walk" they can easily become aggressive with other dogs in their pack.

Before posting about a breed you should research..your personal experience could mislead someone & then we'll have another abandoned pet to deal with at the shelter.

We have ONLY purchased from quality conscious AKC Breeders, since the early 80's, neutering all by the age of six months. Of the six dogs we've had, none EVER had an aggressive episode with a human,(cats are another issue). I also disagree with your statement that they are difficult to train. They have a long attention span, with one who knows how to train.
You clearly over-generalize the breed. To keep harmony in the pack, neutering is much more important than "daily walks."
I believe my 25+ years' experience with the Shar-Pei qualifies my "research."

The fact that you put all breeders in the same catagory as puppy mills, disqualifies you as a canine authority.

The Shar-Pei MAY carry an odor, but it is NOT "due to the skin folds." Depending on breeding and/or type of food consumption, the breed may secrete a skin oil, which carries an odor. There are a few "wive's tales" about the skin folds, none of which are true.

oh i love shar-peis! Everyone in my family hates them except for me. I like any dog but mainly the cute wrinkley ones. I use shar pei images alot in my dog stories, but my true dog is the English bulldog. I have one, and she is adorable.

i think what your saying is so true they are a special breed,i have a neutered female for 4years now i think there a really loving breed and i thinkthey are miss understood. im thinking of starting to breed but i dont really know where to start can you give me any info?

My mix is the most confident and fearless dog that i've had. He has the shar pei temperament (as described in reading up on them). I love mine. I like his smarts, confidence, and how loyal he is with me. I believe that with proper training and socialization, they make great companions. However, based on what i read and have seen, this breed is dominant and needs an owner that understands them and guides them so they use their natural confidence productivetly.
