"Koretz said people who are considering declawing their cats to protect their furniture should instead buy scratching posts; cover their pet's claws with a plastic coating called "soft paws"; clip claws frequently; or adopt a second cat to keep the other feline company."

Tried all of that including the deterrent sprays. I gave up having a couch and upholstered furniture altogether. Only after all of the furniture was gone did Mr. Scratchy finally give in and rip into his scratching post. However the decision to not declaw was MINE!

This type of intervention from government is why Obumma is dangerous and he needs to be declawed by turning the congress Republican next year.

Shame on you for having the ba lls to set the record straight. Several of other posters have cats that don't scratch furniture so they obviously believe your should be able to make your cat do the same if you were just a decent cat owner. Or is it that they think shredded furniture is a small price that all cat owners should be willing to pay, so that they can own a cat?

Perhaps you should have considered another alternative, like turning throwing your cat out of the house and abandoning it like many other people do when their cats destroy furniture. You didn't but many people do and many more will if we remove the option of declawing them.

Not everyone is willing to get rid of all their scratchable furniture, and will choose the option of abandoning their cats, if this becomes law. So Mr. Goody Two Shoes, who is trying so hard to help cats, will actually be directly responsible for causing thousands of them to be abandoned.

Always consider the unintended consequences.

Look at the cities that have or are attempting to ban declawing. It's the luatic fringe. I'll bet they are the same ones that that are against circumcisions.

I did run into a woman one time that I wish had been declawed.
