Reader: Squatters an underlying problem in the city of Fitchburg

Granted open fires in buildings and cutting off pipes tend to border on life threatening, but why is this such a problem? There are a record number of foreclosures going on, the likes of which we have not seen ... Full Story

Many Cities and Towns are having this problem, Fitchburg does not hold the torch.

One gripe, Mortgages are not "forced" on anyone.

Good proposal that needs to be implemented quickly concerning abandoned buildings accross the State, not just Boston...

This is not a Fitchburg problem, it is wide spread throughout the State. Mortgages are not "forced" on anyone.

A good proposal that needs to be implemented throughout the state and soon...

Everything about fitchburg sucks. I's dirty , it's run down, and it's a haven for every drug dealer and junkie in a 100 mile radias. Not to mention Unitil with what they call thier much needed rate increase. My 4 bedroom home for a family of 6 costs me any where from 650.00 to 750.00 per month. Yea time to clean house Ms. Wong

Dotty, do you live in fitchburg?? Why if you hate it so bad. No one is forced to live in this city. Yes I agree with a lot of you, especially the Unitil thing, drugs etc. But why say it sucks and continue to live in it. Also move to a smaller place, that should help with the electricity costs.

Jennifer: I agree

Dottie: Everything about Fitchburg sucks

Forget them Tracy, they exist here only to promote the S&E's ultimate goals, to thrive on misery.

I wish more people would stand up and fight for this cause. Unitil is seriously robbing there customers, have been for years. Why has the mayors of the past, and it will problaby continue, choose to ignore this issue? Another serious problems is the rental rates in Fitchburg and the surrounding towns have soared in the past few years. I think there should be rent controls set in place, there are alot of people that live on a fixed income that simply cannot afford the rent. Landlords I know you need to make money but maybe greed has crept in a little to much. Landlords and Unitil can only blame themselves for this problem. The greedy bug has seem to settle in the area, we do have a new mayor in Fitchburg and like the rest she will problaby not listen to reason, let competing utility companys in and set rent control if it starts in one town maybe it will catch on with the rest.

the new mayor is going to be like all the rest she is not going to do anything about unitil and the solution to the homeless in fitchburg is throw unitil out lower the rents and tell the damn politicians to start doing there jobs when all you get is lip service that sucks. this is a challenge to the new mayor get rid of unitil and open there building as a temporary shelter for families since there are not any in this area and i think unitil owes the community that much and that would just be a start/ can you do it, i wont be holding my breath but if a miracle does happen i would happily volunteer to run the shelter for you.

I live in Fitchburg (the rural part, which is most of Fitchburg, the part no one knows about) and I don't get my power from Unitil. There are other options, open your mind. Electricity is not a right and is also not only provided by the power lines. It is cheaper to make your own in many places, including Fitchburg.
And yes - Fitchburg Sucks - mostly because it is a city and because drugs are illegal, expensive and folks who want them have to steal to get them. Make them legal and crime will go down - everywhere. Think of how much more crime there would be if they made booze illegal.
Fitchburg should be divided into two towns - the city and the rural part. They are totally different with different needs.
Folks that want to have rent controls should push more for their socialist fairy tale land and push to get rid of the free market (so they can suffer in many more ways). Folks that are one month away from loosing their houses should not have bought them in the first place.

The better cities and towns of Massachusetts don't have this problem because they don't allow this to go on.They don't allow homeless vagrants and prostitutes and drug addicts to freely loiter in public.Fitchburg attracts these people because of it's lack of self preservation. It is a dying city because of these false liberal ideas.Sane people will flee.Every drug dealer and illegal immigrant and welfare recipient from Lawrence to NYC to Latin America has some connection to Fitchburg.
Also every Frenchmen, Italian, Finnish, Greek, Pakistani, Irish, English. Ever hear of 6 degrees of separation. Gosh, you bigots are so ignorant.

Yes and the real estate industry has been so against the sale of houses to anyone who could sign their name. Find the problem where it exists, with the ones that are making the profits.

As far as two towns are concerned, IF YOU DON"T LIKE FITCHBURG as a unified CITY, GET OUT. We've had enough of people trying to divide and start us over as a town. What this city needs is a unified populous. We are Americans not left or right, socialist or capitalist. We are Americans. We are better than all the bickering and, yes, divisiveness. If we are fighting against ourselves and that is the least productive method of getting anything done.

UNITED WE STAND. DIVIDED WE FALL.

I just moved back to Massachusetts after living down south and abroad for 25 years. I have seen places that suffer from poverty, strife, and disease. I have never seen a town or city that is uglier than Fitchburg. Dirty, run down, poorly laid out, and the majority of the people I've seen there look half dead. Someone drop a small thermo-nuclear device on that town and do the world a favor!....

Fitchburg is like Dave says. What Dave did not get a couple years ago is that our national economy has been f'd thanks to so many factors that it is not even a party issue anymor, it's part of a sad national trend. The thermonuclear option, while funny to anyone who does not want to actually fix problems or point out the real culprits, is just a useless term thrown out by careless fingers. The turth is that we have soem truly useless and bad people living in this city, and many of them are happen to be from 2-3 different countries of origin. They commit crime, disregard authority, and ruin our image. I would like to see our leaders stand up to this ugliness...and if they are unwilling....then they should step aside, and let someone speak on behalf of this town who does not care so much about re-election as they care about fixing the problem. Fitchburg has infrastructure for business and needs to market that, while sending a clear message that dirtbags will not be tolerated. Any new mayor...post-Wong should also lobby for a redesign of downtown and quicker access to route 2. Dave in "Lancaster" need not weigh in...it is high time for people who live in Fitchburg to take this City back....but we need some leadership that eschew "Gateway" to make this happen.
