Snap! Crackle! Pop!...Goes the Student Loan Bubble!

Full story: dailyreckoning.com

Signing up for a huge student loan was a mistake. Both you and the lender had assumed a certain type of job market would exist four years into the future. Your lender — the US government — has long subsidized unsustainable activity. In 2009, economists encouraged politicians to promote even more nonsensical spending than usual. “Spending on something — anything — is valuable and necessary stimulus!” they said.

This is why we need to get rid of what we have in office now and bring in more fiscally sound politicans. Whether they're Democrat or Republican, let's get people who know how to manage money to rehaul the monster we have now.

Anyone notice that tuition rose in direct proportion to the amount of money the banksters were willing to loan? And their number$ went up, as the American taxpayers guaranteed no losses for them? With huge compound interest? Yep, we hold THAT bag....

Why would anyone borrow money to get an education with no garauntee of employment? I know how that sounds, but I mean - if I buy a car, I do a little research first - I just don't invest in something that big without understanding what my money is buying. I invested in Engineering - not for everyone I know - but the lines for jobs when I finished college were shorter. Example: I have a buddy that has a major in Greek Theology. I asked him what ever possessed him to get a degree in that field? His answer: "I like Greek history - I thought it was a good choice at the time."

Nope - I really have no sympathy for kids that borrow to get a degree in a field that they "like." Sometimes you need to look at the market and make a decision for something outside your interests and invest in the future.

One last thing - they ought not borrow money for 5-6 year students. It is very possible to complete school in 4 years - it's called studying and not partying.

An opinion piece written on a website peddling commodities is hardly unbiased. However, I do think they make many good points and that's why I myself have invested in and plan to continue investing in gold shares.

The best advice anyone has ever given me about student loans is one that I read in the book 'Quick Tips For Saving Money.' In it they say keep student loans low and avoid them entirely is possible (or something to that effect).

With the skyrocketing costs of college these days and the inability to get rid of any defaults through bankruptcy a borrower could be stuck with those payments for a lifetime!

Let's be clear, this is not a news article, but an op ed.

Not critiquing the writer's opinion, which may be partially or totally correct.
But at the end, it's not necessarily what happened, or will happen, it's what the writer opines.

What I opine is that the cost of higher education has gone through the roof, for reasons I'm not sure we understand. As a result, instead of owing a manageable several thousand dollars that my brother owed upon graduating 25 years ago, kids are now owing an average of almost 30 thousand, with some owing 3, 4, and 5 times that.

It's a complicated issue to be certain, and I opine that the writer has hit squarely on 5, maybe 10% of the problems and causes.

ps: I'm not a democrat, or even an Obama supporter per se, but those out there throwing this in the current administration's lap don't have or don't want the facts which are plain and obvious.

Sorry to drone on so. Education for our young people will make a big difference in our country and world down the road, and is kind of a hot topic for me.

Yes, I've seen many do it without the student's knowledge.

Daily Horoscope for May 22

Libra

Be very careful when handling financial matters today because not everything is as straightforward as it seems. For instance, someone may tell you about a fail-safe way of making money but neglect to mention all the reasons why it's totally illegal. There could also be mistakes if you're spending money, such as being short-changed or overcharged. So watch out!
