Minimum wage set to rise 70 cents, but higher costs across the ...

The bad news: Higher gas and food prices are swallowing it up, and some small businesses will pass the cost of the wage hike to consumers.

LOL! If you raise the workers wage too much, so will the business do the same either business increase its price for service/product and/or layoff worker(s)... anyway we see it as a loosing proposition for all the employers and employees and even consumers takes short end of the stick. Nothing change! Any other bright ideas?

Unless the gov't lowers it's income taxes by 20% to 50% and/or decrease or eradicate some of other 30 plus various taxes and growing.

And another thing, I don't understand why we business should have to pay workers at all! They should consider themselves lucky to have a job at all. No wonder businesses are moving production to China. Its ridiculous that gov't should force employers to pay their employees.

Let the market dictate what employees are paid! If no one will work for $6/hour, employers will pay more. If you earn $15/hour, will you get the same pay increase? NO! It reduces the standard of living for those who spent the time and money to receive their specialized training. We are fast becoming a socialist, maybe even communist, country.

Hello Global Idiots out of Atlanta, Ga!
This Global Idiots out of NY

Why pay the workers? BWHAHHAAAA

The US corporation don't care where the go in the world as long it's competitive advantage for them to do so. Why pay benefits and hi-wages... Sorry, America and other counties sneeze China gets the cold, just past year China's 10,000 plus Manufacturers closed shop and moved to Loas, vietnam or to other cheaper locations in the world. Wrong! Actually the gov'ts are in collusion with the businesses !

A scary future!
Some countries like Loas is paying its workers (more slaves and serfs) a 2 pennies to 5 pennies on the USD , how are we to compete and whats the defining line and for fair world wage system?

Some cities have enacted a high minimum wage, one example being Santa Fe, NM. If you go there, everything within the city limits is more expensive. Food, gas, you name it, a drastic minimum wage increase changes the price of goods and services across the board and disrupts the free market.

For those living off minimum wage jobs, you should encourage your representatives to enforce immigration laws so that illegals are not taking jobs for low rates and driving the market cost of labor down.

I just can not imagine how a husband and wife, both earning min. wage could make it in this world today. Especially if they had a few kids. And...if they are not using all the entitlements available, I just can't fathom how they make ends meet.

Someone please explain to me again why a CEO of a utility, that can run by itself basically, is worth $10 million + perks a year. But, a man spending 10 or 12 hours a day in the hot sun picking tomatoes or potatos or celery is worth $5.15 a hour.

Correcting you, the State actually enacts the Min. Wage law not the city gov't.

Minimum wage is just that, minimum! It is not supposed to be the wage for the average adult raising a family. If you are raising a family on minimum wage you must have made some major mistakes in your life. If you have to pay someone with no experience 10-12 an hour you will only see an increase in more illegals taking jobs under the table.

Trust me, there are few, if any married coples making minimum wage, unless it's a second job, or they're working for their own company, and drawing a wage to meet IRS requirements.

And the reason ag workers make $5.15 an hour is that you won't pay $7.00 for a tomato.

This is the crux of the problem. I just had to repeat it.

We ALL need to FORCE our representatives to crack down on illegal immigration!

Typical conservative reaction. "Laos pays .05 an hour, workers here should work for free because they're lucky to have a job, let the market decide, blah-blah-blah. They would just love things to revert back to "The Jungle". Make people work 60 hours a week, 365 days a year, with no time-off, no benefits, & no rights.
The rich are suffering in this country because it's sooo unfair that the government restricts what they can get away with. Snif-snif.
Maybe they can move to Laos. Then they don't have to worry about the big bad government as much. Have 6 year-olds work for them. They might actually be happy.

Idiot? Well that sets your intelligence level. Thanks for the comment. So...by your comment the man making $10 million dollars + perks a year is well worth it, right? Tell my father that, the man that worked through every rainy and snowy storm up in a bucket truck for 30 years just to make sure you had power. And he did it all for a he11 of a lot less than $10 million a year. Have you ever been in a automated utility center control room? Go to PPL and take the tour. next time before you run your mouth...know what you are talking about.

There are a LOT of married couples making minimum wage or close to it out there today. And if they won't work it, some illegal will. The goal of any business is to keep costs as low as possible and excel profits. Labor is one of the most expensive parts of business. That is why business has been all over legislators to allow illegal immigration to continue, and they will stay all over legislators like rats on cheese to protect their business interests as long as possible.

Well, I guess he should have gone to college. His job wasn't worth $10 million because anyone with a high school education could do it.

Make no mistake, I'm not putting your father down. I like hardworking people, and I have no problem with people who work bluecollar jobs. What I have a problem with is the idea that anyone can do what a CEO can do. That's just not true, and if you don't realize that it's not true, then you are, in fact, an idiot.
