The share of Americans' income that comes from government benefit programs, like Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, more than doubled over the last four decades, rising from 8 percent in 1969 to 18 percent in 2009.

Interesting patterns. My very conservative county is amoung the most dependent in the nation on Veterans Benefits, and since the county is a 'retirement haven' we are well represented in Social Secutity and Medicare payments. As a retirement haven we have very little unemployment being paid.
Many of the residents want to cut government expendatures, but doing so would injure the local economy.

That is often the way of it.
The recent bruhaha about military C130 squadrons being moved away from the Gulf states is another.

Those who are the most incensed about "government welfare" always exempt themselves, because "they are entitled."

Truth is, the southern and western states are a giant welfare pit; supported by the NE, mid-west, California, and a few other states.

You didn't even have to read past the first paragraph to real the numbers are from 1969 to 2009. I'm not even going to waste time explain who was President during these years.

USA TODAY analyzed data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Census Bureau to determine the importance of government benefits in each state. The benefit numbers represent average amounts received per person not just for those in a program.

The benefits include what people receive for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, veterans' programs, college scholarships and many other government programs.

Overall, government checks flow from affluent states, generally in the Northeast and West, to less affluent states, especially in the South."

You Tea Baggers don't read so good.

It's not just assistance paid - since there's the question of population density and also that some of these payments, like college loans, indicate health - but it's a matter of revenues collected from the states as well.

The backwards buybull type states are the most on welfare, on the whole. Despite the large urban cities in the blue states which definitely have large numbers of disadvantaged citizens.

I know this is way out there but maybe the poor can't afford to live in the so called more affluent states.

People should not worry about welfare it is a very small slice of the budget, medicare is where the money will go in the future.

For your information, peanut..........your state (Pennsylvania) recieves $1.07 for each dollar put in...

Texas...who puts in more money to federal coffers than all states except California (which is quickly losing ground due to bankruptcies) Get's back 93 cents for every dollar put in. So who the hell is supporting whom??????????

Tax Foundation.......Census Bureau 2005

Since then.....As growth appears to be booming in most red states with low taxes and regulations... more money is going from those states to federal coffers. As more and more cities in California declare bankruptcies....they take is growing.

What's really cool is that the states that voted most for Obama will also be the ones who will see the highest tax increases per capita. Taking it right up the pooper! Love it.

Click on the Veterans Benefits tab and notice how PA and NY are almost at 0%. Compare that to Texas and Oklahoma and other Southern states. Easy to see where the real Americans come from.

That is way out there. Giant hordes of poor people live in "affluent" states such as NY, MA, and CA.
