Full story: Santa Cruz Sentinel

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously endorsed a countywide effort to ban single-use plastic bags and reduce paper bags handed out by retailers, a move that is gaining traction throughout California even though such measures are fraught with legal questions.

"Everyone that has taken action has been sued," said Bob Nelson, the city's solid waste superintendent.
So why do it? My impression is most folks don't litter, so we will all be inconvenienced to target a minority of folks.
Tonight I bought bulk salad mix and bulk rice at the store in ... wait for it... plastic bags. Did I throw 'em out, toss 'em in the creek? No, they are in my refrigerator. And when I've eaten the salad mix, the bog will get recycled or rinsed and used again. W-T-F is wrong with these people?

Why not do MORE to kill what's left of the local economy! Let's just finish the whole thing off ... just to make the Silly Kounsel feel self-righteous and politically correct.

Save Our Shores must be getting tired of Saving Our Shores. They do a great job of picking up after the slobs now. What will they do to feel good when there are no more plastic bags? Maybe they can pick up syringes in the Pogonip instead.

Apparently, our Santa Cruz city council members and our county supervisors are more concerned with bags than our water supply and future.

These enviro-wackos will jump on any bandwagon. They gave you gasoline loaded with MTBE and polluted your drinking water. They filed lawsuits over a fish; while the farm economy goes to hell. Going nuts over bags (which can be recycled) is their usual reactionary response.

Meanwhile there is just one recycling center in the city of Santa Cruz. That COSTCO facility is over crowded and discourages people from using it. Gone are the centers located in the neighborhoods since SAFEWAY shut their operations down. The beer distributor on Swift and Mission closed many years ago too. And the phony green silly council hasn't done s--- to remedy this problem; because they would prefer that their own sanitation department had the monopoly on collecting recycleable items..

Santa Cruz deserves leadership that will focus on the issues that are important to its citizens. We currently do not have this, we need to organize and vote for change. How in Gods name can plastic bags be a priority while the town is engulfed in a downward spiral of drugs, crime and transient bums.

I was hoping to read "City Counsel rids Santa Cruz of Bums!" I was extremely disappointed when I read "bags". Time to rid Santa Cruz of an inept City Counsel.

Again and again SC council members try to appear that they are doing somthing while all along they are engauged in political self gratification.

There is a budget to be balanced, crime issues to be solved, water resources to be addressed and at the same time revenue needs to be increased without rasing the burden on the tax payer.

I may be sounding like a one trick pony but, it is time to vote. It is our only tool for change.

I was in a San Francisco Safeway the other day and was completely blown away by all the brown paper bags being used. SF already has a plastic bag ban. The old plastic bags inevitably wound up in the ocean circling in the Pacific Gyre. San Francisco stood up and did something about it. Way to go SF.

Thank you! I don't want to subsidize others who want bags from stores when I carry my own--as I do in other countries where they care, and this works after the whining and moaning.
Congrats, city council! This will save us all $ and environment in the long run.

Daily Horoscope for February 13

Cancer

With Mars and Saturn working in harmony, you'll find the support you need through friends or associates. Someone pitches in to help which will let you take a concrete step towards achieving your goals. There could however be a cost in terms of your emotional and domestic life because of what you're doing. Has responsibility taken you away from those you're close to? Try to make things up in another way.
