Full story: News10 Sacramento

You can see the collection of tents as you drive north on Highway 99 through Stockton but it's not recreational camping that's going on.

A great place to do your dishes and go to the bathroom, and wash you body, but there is nothing they can do about the dumping in the water, go ahead and drink up, the water is just fine.

excerpt [A woman who also camps near Highway 99 along the canal said the shelter staff "tells you what to do, and I like doing my own thing."]

I wonder if the shelter told her to NOT get a job would she feel the need to do some serious job hunting?

I'm sorry, but there is absolutely no reason to be living along a canal in plain view and have no shame.

Yes my family has been homeless, but we went and stayed in a motel until things got better and they did because we pulled together and moved ahead with our lives.

Even the mentally can go and move into half-way houses and group homes. These people don't want help. They think its their God given right to be an eye sore and nuisance to the rest of us.

When they stop making shelters into minimum security lock ups- a lot more of the homeless will go to them.Set up legal campgrounds and give the occupants the same respect and rights given to those that have homes.Life is not a fair and even playing field.

Nope! It flows west, they are on the Calavares river, one side they call the diverting canal but it is still part of the river that flows into the delta.

A small reply to a big problem; I worked Stockton PD for 10 years. I began my career as an opened minded person. More importantly is that I ended my 10 years there as an open minded person. When I began work there I was most aquainted with recent college grads who always critiqued those in authority. I still believe that those in authority should always be subject to critic. However that goes equally for those in favor of being the critic. I "PERSONALLY" spent 10 hours per day working with and for these people. I once thought that they were unfairly judged. I am sure that upon occassion this is the case. In truth I have NEVER come upon a 'homeless' person in Stockton who did not get there via a drug problem.*If you sincerely believe that in 2007 the homeless in Stockton are only there due to being treated unfairly then you must do yourself a favor. Why havent you gone to Stockton? Its less than an hour from any point in Sacramento! Go spend YOUR 10hrs/day. It wont take you 10 years to figure it out..........

WOW Amanda, that was harsh.. are you a little bit bitter ? I have been feeding the homeless for 10+ years, and I have seen people come in homeless then 6 months later they have a good paying job, a car, a harley, and are doing quite well.. So not ALL HOMELESS PEOPLE are not as bad as people stereotype them out to be... just kills me how people judge the homeless.. you dont know the situation & why they are homeless. Why dont you ask before condemning them... just a thought

I will agree. Soon as I stopped my drinking and "cracking" I found a home so fast there was almost an entire wagon train of substance abusing "friends" following me up MY PATH, trying to get in. The majority are out there because they want to abuse their substances, and they are not rich, so they make their choices. I've got 9 years of sobriety with AA and I'm sitting in my pad, after eating a chicken dinner, writing on my DELL computer.

They could get a job working in the fields or at McDonalds.

Wait a minute, the illegals are working those jobs!

We can't offend the illegals now can we?

Daily Horoscope for December 31

Libra

If you live with other people you have to resign yourself to the fact that you all want to do different things today. The more you urge togetherness, the more everyone will be determined under tonight's Full Moon to do their own thing even if it creates problems. Try to play this down as much as possible because it's also a lunar eclipse and getting angry won't solve anything; it may even make the situation worse. Maybe this is a chance for you to do what you want for a change, too? Anyway, enjoy yourself tonight, Libra because you deserve it!
