Not really that surprising.

The three most important things you can do when you are caught stealing are deny, deny and deny.

They could have printed their own bar codes on their home PC using a bar-code generating program, and used those bar codes to buy more expensive items at lower prices.
That is what a lot of people are doing today and getting away with it.
You just did not know that did you?

Yes, the article implies that you can walk into Home Depot and purchase lethal military ordnance. This simply cannot be true. If it was THAT simple to acquire hand grenades, we would hear about them being used in the media. More death and mayhem than we already have.

Nor is it likely they sell 'sawed-off shotguns' as the article mentions were found. Ammunition? Maybe, I don't know for sure. But I doubt it: it doesn't strike me as 'home improvement'.

This is just poorly edited journalism, that's all.

why don't these big department stores try upping thier security,all the do when thigs start missing is report to thier insurance companies and get paid from it,try giving someone more then min.wage to protest thier inventory and the y won't have this problem

Somebody stole some thigs from the y and now there are protesters being paid minimum wage?
