What kind of repercussions will there be for poor Yang Peiyi?

The psychological wellbeing of the individual takes a backseat when it comes to bringing glory to the country. Respect for audience isn't even a consideration.
Bringing glory to the country and party is such a proud endeavour that it trumps everything else. Even the 7yr old knows at that young an age how to tow the party line judging by her comments.
I get all that but to subject a 7yr old to that is a new low even for China.

If you take drugs you are not allowed to take part fully
in the Olympics. You can not lend your legs or arms to someone else.
Yang Peiyi did not take drugs . They stole her voice.
Let her out in all her glory, and sing in the closing ceremony.

Pavarotti's story is a totally different thing. At least both performers' names appeared on the program. They're not hiding from it, just wanted to make the show perfect.

Yang Peiyi said she felt happy that her voice appeared at last. Why are you guys so excited? If you think this is unacceptable, then most of the movies and TV shows are fake as well, because it is so common that the actor's voice doesn't belong to himself. If the organizer wanted to hoax people, they wouldn't have exposed it by themselves.

im a canadian born chinese, and im ashamed of the chinese culture and how image is EVERYTHING. those that defend the decision state that at least Yang Peiyi got to sing, thats all she wanted to be remembered as. Seems to me from the backlash resulting in this horrid decision made by the chinese officials, that she will be remembered more as the girl who wasn't cute enough, than the girl with an angelic voice. This decision to replace Yang Peiyi has resulted in hurting China's image, rather that preserving it, because in Western cultures, little girls should NOT be told they aren't cute enough. (and for the record, it is not acceptable to tell someone you notice they are getting fat, getting old, losing hair, have bad teeth etc. The chinese culture deems this to be acceptable but to us Westerners, quite simply, rude).

I hope that Trey Parker and Matt Stone make fun of this in a new episode of South Park.

China has made a big mistake by choosing the 'more attractive' girl to lip-sync the song. Honestly, what kind of message is that sending to the word? So many people are actually trying to make a difference to society to improve our childrens' self esteem and chinese parents often seem to want the best for their children. But if the goverment really wants this, then why are they choosing someone like Lin to represent the Olympics? All she has is a pretty face, when in reality we don't know whether or not she has a good personality. The saddest part of all is how hard the real singer worked towards that goal, only to be rejected for 'not being cute enough' in the end. What kind of heartless, selfish people would make that kind of a decision to crush the dreams of a seven year old girl?
What's more is that the message of their decision reflects on China, and by their course of actions,a great deal of people may already have lost respect for them.

To Mary, you should be ashamed of yourself for feeling that way. I don't think you understand Chinese culture enough to make the conclusion that image is everything for Chinese.

Family is probably "everything" (or almost) and not image. Hope you can spend some time trying to learn the Chinese culture based more on close observations rather than baseless assumptions.

Anyways, most people do care of their looks being presentable to their friends, collegues, etc. That is why people wear make-ups to cover up their imperfections. I believe the same goes to the organizers for that decision, and especially under such pressures to do their best.

The spirit of the Olympics is to be the best you can be and it’s alright to have flaws as long as you give your best performance, and be yourself.

I think the organizers are missing this point to have made such a thoughtless decision.

I find it hard to believe that they are not able to find a girl with a great voice and a cute face among millions of young girls in China.

Either they are not thinking straight or they are smart, in the wrong light, to have cooked up this scandal themselves for publicity sake. I wonder.

I believe Yang Peiyi will shine from this scandal and I pity Lin Miaoke more as she could suffer in shame as a victim of the organizers' stupidity.

This scandal may be taken advantage by China’s critics, to hit out on China’s reputation in covering up. However, please try to understand the reason behind every cover-up action.

Covering up may not necessarily means there's evil lurking behind. Not revealing certain truth may not necessarily be a bad thing. We all do it at some point of our lives, such as not telling the truth of sex to your 5 year-old kid when he or she asked. Hence, the birds and the bees?

We, as human beings, tend to cover up our flaws and try to present the best we can to those we CARE about their opinions and also judgements.

Is there a race where the girls do no wear make up to cover up their imperfections? Is there a country where the government has absolutely NO secrets? A husband with ABSOLUTELY nothing to hide from his wife, and vice versa? A company with nothing to hide, even from its employees? Not even trade secrets or technology breakthrough?

Sometimes, to cover up could mean "to protect".

The important thing is the reason behind the cover up action. If it is noble, then I believe it’s fine. Well, as long as it's done rightly.

Most people online, including here, tend to put up a different “face” and I don’t think anyone here has any ill intentions of doing so.

The organizers put up a different “face” behind that beautiful voice, thinking the world would appreciate the song better. Guess they were wrong.

I think they are just missing the point, the true spirit of the Olympics. Anyways, who are they to judge if one girl is cuter than the other?

They simply made A SILLY MISTAKE.

Nevertheless, congratulations to the organizers for a SPECTACULAR opening ceremony to cheer up the world. That’s an excellent masterpiece to set new standards for future Olympic ceremonies.

No one is perfect, learn to live with this fact.

Who has given the rights to manipulate these girls...My god…this is so outrageous….
I totally agree that the majority of Chinese people are so dishonest, manipulative and selfish. With this incident they have shown that they are so brainless too...shame on them..

"Majority of Chinese people"? Not only is that brainless statement, it's incredily bigoted and offensive too.

While I strongly disagree with what they did to the girl, it's the result of the ruling oligarchy in china and nothing to do with the "majority of Chinese people". I guess having that "majority" disclaimer in there makes it all right to you.

But of course racists like you will jump at any opportunity to spew your hate when in you're no better than the very act you condemn.

The 9yr old girl doesn't deserve becoming " an international singing sensation". This is just SO not right. That 7 yr old is SO cute, i can't believe how far China went this time..

I don't understand what the fuck the Politburo member (I believe he is Liu Qi) was thinking when he decided to replace Yang Peiyi with Lin Miaoke. Okay I agree Lin is more pretty than Yang. But if appearance is that important, why did they let Liu Huan to sign at the opening ceremony? He is THE ugliest singer in China, period (maybe he is the ugliest singer in the whole world). Why didn't they use Liu Huan's voice with Liu Dehua (Andy Lau)'s face?

Yes Chinese officials always lie. Most Chinese media covering this story used the word "shuanghuang",it's an art form originated in China used for entertainment. It means to have one person perform in the other's voice.Usually the voice will give difficult orders so that the performer will struggle hard to meet the orders.Only this time it's not artistry,it's betrayal to Lin Miaoke because the poor girl didn't even know that was not her voice, and to Peiyi, hope she's not deeply hurt by this.No matter what,I just want to say that they don't hold the intention to hurt both girls. It's just some brainless officials.I really felt for both kids. They are both so adorable, really innocent girls. When I was watching the state media's interview of both girls,I really hope they will get through this.
