The Politics of Spite

Full story: www.nytimes.com

[...] So what did we learn from this moment? For one thing, we learned that the modern conservative movement, which dominates the modern Republican Party, has the emotional maturity of a bratty 13-year-old . But more important, the episode illustrated an essential truth about the state of American politics: at this point, the guiding principle of one of our nation’s two great political parties is spite pure and simple. If Republicans think something might be good for the president, they’re against it — whether or not it’s good for America .

They love their 1950s vision of America. Too bad they don't love America as it really is.

When they don't like an election result or a public figure, the hate with a fervor that matches the Taliban. Even when it's real America and real Americans.

It's so sad to witness. Rev Wright has nothing on these Conservatives.

First a small correction, todays Republican Party should not in any way, shape or form be associated with conservative thought. Conservatives are against Medicare and are against growth in entitlements (actually they are against the entitlement itself, but have dropped back to a defensive position trying to stop or slow growth) while todays Republican Party defends it and swears they will not let the President save money there.

Second, conservatives would never use the arguments that today's Republicans use in policy debates. Conservatives are honorable and not afraid of the truth, in fact they insist on an honest argument built on facts.

Paul has it wrong, it is the Republican Party that is playing like the schoolyard bully. Conservatives are good people.

Great article by Paul Krugman of The New York Times.

The jubilant and unpatriotic reaction by the right-wingers last week to the disappointing news that America lost its bid to host the 2016 Olympics vindicated those of us on the left that had be warning Americans about the GOP and its base. They are bitter, hateful and dangerous. A lot of these right-wing nuts placed John McCain’s bumper sticker that read “Country First”, but these people despise their country.

They haven’t gotten over the fact that we kicked their ass in the last 2 elections and deep down they know that they will not regain power for a very long time. 2010 and 2012 is but a pipe dream with Sarah Palin sliding down into the sewer first. They crave failure because they think that failure is the only chance that they have to get the Black guy out of the White House and get themselves back into power. These un-American right-wingers are sad and pathetic and patriotic Americans will not forget them cheering over bad news for this country the way Muslims were cheering in the streets after they heard about 9-11.

Since when does the missed oppertunity for graft and corruption by Obama's friends in Chicago mean a loss for America?

Obama promised the voters that the world community would love America again as soon as Bush was gone and Obama was in office.

But it looks like the Anointed One lied about that too.

By definition all editorials are a form of fabrication in the sense that the editorial did not exist before, unless of course it was plagerized.

However, I think that you meant a fabrication as in being false. Easilly asserted when you do not bother to point out the falsehoods contained therein.

When reading something from the NY Times, you have to look at the source. The NY Times is completely biased on its liberal leanings. Journalism in the NY Times is non-existent. They do not report the news as it is, but, give everything a far left liberal swing. The NY Times is a complete disgrace and I take offense to their statement, "modern conservative movement, which dominates the modern Republican Party, has the emotional maturity of a bratty 13-year-old."

I for one am a conservative and a Libertarian. I do not bully like the times is claiming. I will be more than happy to have a conversation with a leftist liberal and point out where they are wrong. But to label people is why there is so much more partisan crap today. It is a disgrace. Maybe a good reason why the NY Times is broke and is begging for a government bailout in order to stay afloat. Pitiful.

Well - Well - Well. If it isn't the Enron Advising Krugman speaking of hypocrites as if he doesn't see one in the mirror every morn.

Well - Well -Well. If it isn't the other pathetic "cling-ons" hoping for their Hypocrite cheerleader could give them guidance in these tough times brack Obomber is experiencing.

After all, real American men only lost their lives fighting for he & us while Brack was pimping the Olympic Games. All of his cronies we're counting on this as their retirement ticket c/o unchecked Federal Funding & an Eminent Domain orgy.

Needless to say, Gen. Stanley McChrystal's new Strategy Report saying WE WILL LOSE THE WAR, was busy gathering Dust on Brack's desk for the last 5 weeks.

Yes, while Brack was too busy to give his hand Picked Commander even 30 minutes of his precious time, the Taliban were busy planning, moving on & overrunning an US post Killing 8 American Soldiers.

Does this shake some sense of urgency into this creature? Not in the slightest. He goes on - DATE NIGHT - to celebrate.

Yes - Yes - Yes. At a critical juncture in Obama's Chosen War, when his command calls for help and more Americans dying every month, Obama laughingly raises his Champagne glass for a toast of the good life w/Michelle.

That's what it's about. Case in point is the health insurance business that wants to take control of the dollars that should be designed to help people, but somehow those dollars are controlled and manipulated so that those in charge of the health insurance corporations reap millions while consumers don't get the healthcare they need and should be entitled to. How else can the health insurance manipulators get the money they want to buy airplanes, jet to lavish vacation spots and own multiple million dollar homes, except by controlling the premiums that people have to pay, and providing little or no health care. Healthcare for profit is disgraceful. Private health insurance companies really aren't needed. Jobs will be very plentiful under the government sponsored public option healthcare plan. Money should stop flowing to greedy healthcare insurance corporations-- let them think up another way to steal from the people. With the help of conservative Republicans they surely will. Remember the conservative PITCHMAN Ronald Reagan who was given his lines to memorize and make the Conservative economic paradigm sound good-- that's the control we have had to deal with. Donald Regan the former Wall Street GURU, and Reagan's chief of staff, not only told Reagan what to say, but also when to stop talking(as shown in Michael Moore's latest movie "Capitalism-A love Story". It's not about spite, it's about controlling the Treasury, the politics, and the rhetoric of pursuasion(controlling Average Americans) to keep the richest of the rich-- RICH. That's how we ended up in Iraq instead of Afghanistan, where it could have been a done deal by now if the motives had been honestly and earnestly approached by the Bush Administration. A few got super rich off that War-- control. At this point a timetable in Afghanistan should be set-- like Clinton did when he militarily hit back.

If you go back and read my first post on this thread you will see that I agree. As a fiscally conservative, social liberal it is clear to me that the Republican party simply does not represent conservative views.

Tell that to the dozens of Soldiers that Lost their lives at the hands of the enemy while Obama is more concerned about the Olympics and hadn't even considered Gen. McChrystal's 5 week old (New) strategy report saying if he didn't get help ASAP, WE LOSE THE WAR.

Obama is a despicable creature for prioritizing an Olympic ego trip over the lives & safety of US Soldiers deployed in HIS WAR.

I think you are confused. bush/Cheney have left the WhiteHouse and not American Commanders in the field are fully capable and authroized to forment and execute their own tactical plans.

I understand your confusion after the last eight years, but this was part of that change.
