Full story: Newsday

It's a disturbing sign of dysfunction within the Israeli government that a wrongheaded proposal to build a new settlement in the West Bank has received approval.

I am afraid you are deeply mistaken when you refer to "the broader national strategy Olmert adopted from his mentor and predecessor, Ariel Sharon, to give up all settlements"

Neither Sharon nor any Israeli leader has considered giving up all settlements.
Quite the reverse : as a concession prior to the Gaza withdrawal Sharon obtained the support of George Bush for maintaining hold of the major West Bank settlements for ever:
George Bush's words were:
"In light of new realities on the ground, including already existing major Israeli populations centers, it is unrealistic to expect that the outcome of final status negotiations will be a full and complete return to the armistice lines of 1949"

Regarding "New settlement ignores road map": All Israel's Jewish-only settlements (and roads and rules) are every bit as wrongheaded as the new ones... That should be the point....

Investing in institutionalized bigotry and injustice is simply and completely a crime against all of humanity in general- and a crime against the Palestinians in particular, as the Palestinians continue to bear the brunt of the pain and the many insults made by the misnamed Jewish State.

All of historic Palestine should be for its citizens, not a privileged group. Article 13, Section 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that everyone has a right to leave his home and return to his home. Israel, in contravention of international law, refuses to implement this for Palestine's refugees, thus denying their inalienable right to return home.

Bottom line is that there will be no peace in the region until the injustice that any Jew from anywhere in the world may immigrate to historic Palestine and become an instant citizen while the true heirs of the land, holding deeds and keys to their homes, may not even be buried in the land of their birth.
