Hunam in Levittown closing

Full story: Newsday

Any good? Likely answers: Maybe. Sure. No. On Long Island, one of the world's great cuisines generally has become the equivalent of a pizza slice.

Share your memories about Hunam, the quintessential Chinese restaurant in Levittown that has recently closed it doors.

Sad News

July 1, 2007, just reporting in that tonight my husband and I went to Hunam for dinner only to find out that the doors are closed. A nicely worded sign said good-bye to all the restaurant's friends. An emptiness fills us in the loss of our favorite Chinese restaurant: no more river shrimp, egg white corn soup, sizzling chicken or shrimp soup. If only we'd known in advance we could have said good-bye to John....who always greeted us like old friends.

Life goes on but, for now, sadness prevails. We've eaten in lots of places but no soup sizzled like John and Peter's.

I can't believe this. Peter Gianotti writes a complimentary review of a restaurant that isn't Italian.

We can't believe John and Peter are gone! The absolute best Chinese food ever! And the reception we would get when we walked in, oh John where have you gone!! I'll miss all your special Shrimp dishes, only you would remember what I'd like. And Steve, he's still mourning! He's crying and has dreams about Peter's Shredded Beef. I'll never have another Mai Tai like you made, John.
Thanks for the memories boys..........Lynda

My son Graham called up the other day and cried "You're not going to believe this! Hunan is closed!!" We have been going to this restaurant since he was a baby, now 27 and enjoyed the best food, their steamed dumplings (our daughter Alana's favorite), slippery chicken, lake tung ting shrimp and crispy bass. In fact when Graham was a very young boy it was the first restaurant we let him use the mens room alone. His luck, a car hit a telephone pole and knocked out all the power on the block. So, his first trip to the mens room was a disaster, he came running out with his pants down really scared! We still laugh about that. Thank you John and Peter for years of fine dining. Our family will miss you.

So glad to see that John never wavered in how he treated his customers right to the bitter end. Never did he once give a discount to ANYONE on ANYTHING. Would he make you a dish of your choice? Sure. Would he charge you full price for it even though you have been coming in for 29 yrs? You better believe it. He treated people like dirt and would outwardly argue with people in the if you dont like go somewhere else kinda way. Even at the end he didnt have the decency to let people know he was closing. He just shut the doors and that was that. He really only cared about one person-himself. His food was delicious, no question. But the way he closed his restaurant just shows the type of person that he is. Of course he hinted at it several times saying that Peter would probably take over. But his surly attitude and his grandiose idea that NO ONE could be Hunam after him let the place not only fall apart the last few years but pretty much closed an institution. His food will be missed, his customer service will not.
