All I can say is Amen!! Too bad none of the Mets' decision-makers will listen.

That and 29 blown saves? You have to factor that in. You cannot dismantle a team, you have to strengthen it. We all know the bullpen was suspect. With the so called "blank check", which I find very hard to believe, they did not address it.
The Phillies are showing they are a good team, let's see what happens in LA. Regardless, they are impressive. LA, who knows what the Mets could do against them or the Cubs. They did not play, so we will never know.
You follow the Mets, so you also saw what they can to when hot. The hot teams dominate in the playoffs.
Maybe you should qualify your article, with "In my opinion..." This is a typical NY Sports reporter logic, "win now or scrap the team", a foolish approach to anything!

Wally reminds me of an old SNL character: a politician who kept on running attack ads against his opponent after he had won the election. Would it have been too much to have one actual quote in this column actually illustrating the arrogance Wally ascribes to the Mets? Are we going to have Wally writing nasty things about the Strawmen Mets all winter?

These arrogant bums are lazy and stupid. They are EXACTLY where they belong... home watching 2 teams that deserve to be in the playoffs. 29 blown saves. Poor hitting. Poor baserunning. Poor pitching. All they had to do was win 1 more game and they would've been tied with the Brewers. Let's go Phillies... Let's rub some salt into the Met's wounds.. Heck Mets, watch the Phillies and see if you can learn enough to win an extra game or two...

Aside from the obvious huge problem of losing a large number of games after having a lead this team goes flat at times. I can't count the times I watch these guys go through the motions without any fire. I don't feel the desire to win is there half the time. Sometimes they fight back, many times they don't. They are where they belong. Watching the teams that try hard to win every game.

This is one of the worst articles I have ever read. Actually its not even an article its an editorial by a dim witted slob. This guy is an embarrassment to sports journalism - he sounds like Jerome on from the Fan from years back... come to think of it - I haven't heard from Jerome in quite some time-- maybe Jerome and Wally are the same person?

Matthews! Shut up already! With the exception of Carlos Beltran, there wasn't a player on the team who declared their Met team being the best. All you are doing here is reiterating what the Organization already knows as do we! The lineup is top heavy, potent from 1-5,and impotent the rest of the way.The starting pitching is rather thin and the bullpen is a disaster. The players, fans and Organization in no way made light of their competition and at the end of the season admitted upgrades are in order. It is obvious all you are doing is spewing your normal surelyness and hate, while attempting to paint an obnoxious picture of the NY Mets Organization. Consequently you are easy to see thru and as result are inaccurate!

What they are not is a legend in their own mind, nor are they the obnoxious bunch Matthews accuses and "desires" them to be.

actually, accepting that they aren't good enough is a better option than being called chokers. how can you choke/win if you're not good enough? and yet, you label the mets as an arrogant bunch of chokers who can't get the job done. thank you, captain obvious. your daily mets vitriol is nauseating. you're a disgrace. how are you even allowed to write a column?

Amen, Wally!!!!! I'm a big Mets fan, but I don't particularly like this bunch. THey choke when it counts, period. 5 runs in three games against the Marlins. I hear nothing but excuses from Mets fans. Why? They're a soft team. They don't care enough. The PHils deserve to be where they are. They're tougher. They wanted it more, both years.

What was the mets game that prompted this piece of trash? Oh right, you've been writing the same article for a month now...we get it. You've got a very unhealthy fascination with bashing the mets, even when they haven't played a game in weeks. It's making you look very, very small Wally. All you mets fans agreeing with this guy who, by the way, has never ONCE said something positive about this team are welcome to take a flying leap off the bandwagon, and on the yanks' bandwagon. Or you can go root for the Phillies that we're all of a sudden patting on the back and making into the best thing since pine tar. Like the other poster said...which is it Wally, did they choke or were they not good enough. It can't be both! Make up your mind!

I guess you must have slept during the baseball season. The Mets did watch the phillies this year, that why the Mets WON the season series against them. The Mets weren't lazy nor bums, you did not watch game 161 when Johan Santana and the Mets gave all they had left.I remind you that in 2007, the phillies almost FIRE their manager when they couldn't WIN any games in April and May.LUCKY FOR THEM AND HIM they started winning, and GOT HOT IN SEPT. The Mets injury bug, hit them again toward the end of the season, like wise if the phillies bullpen/closer were have been injuried, the phillies would have NEVER made it this far. You said if the Mets would somehow had Won that extra game or two, they would have made the playoff so what, they just like the White Sox were just too bangup to advance. mari wrote: These arrogant bums are lazy and stupid. When the going gets tough for this team, there is a sense felt by many savvy fans that this group will not be up to the task. There is a feeling of predictability about their chances that is not encouraging. Every opposing pitcher suddenly appears to be more than their match. Every opposing hitter ready to contribute the key hit, the same key hit undelivered by a Met. Results in the clutch are so predictable they almost seem scripted. This is not the character of a good team, a team that is deserving of a playoff position. But on and on we go with this collection of not-ready-for-prime-time players, convincing ourselves that this "core" group has what it takes to get it done. If they couldn't succeed with so-called "good years" from Reyes, Wright, Beltran and DelGado, what will it take next year - a totally new bullpen? How, where? It will still come down to team character in the end. How do you shop for that?
