It's fairly clear that the author seems to be on the "Anti-Gun" side of the fence here though the tone is reasonable and they try to be as thoughtful about the argument as possible. However, although the author points out what seems to be a valid reason for the upswing in gun sales--gun enthusiasts fearing a larger, more unstoppable swathe of gun-control laws put forth and passed by Obama and the Democratic Congress--the main thesis doesn't veer from their conviction that guns are directly responsible for an increase in the rate of suicides. I would guess that the author is making a plea in favor of less gun-ownership that is based primarily on fear; stricter laws, crime, because purchasing a gun out of fear leads to an increase of the suicide/homicide-out-of-anger rate, but I can't be certain. Unfortunately, the article, doesn't site any specific statistical analysis of the rate of deaths resulting from gunshots in; suicides, homicides, and "use-in-self-defense. " If perhaps more figures were posted in this vein showing a clear correlation between gun-ownership and self-inflicted/ fury-fueled violence then perhaps the article would have earned the title; "Guns can provide a false sense of security." Ironically, this is a sentiment that I, as a gun-owner, happen to believe.

I agree on the false sense of security remark. So I stuck a couple of M18A1 Claymore Antipersonnel Mines on the front porch just in case. Don't worry, I made sure the "FRONT TOWARD ENEMY" side faces the road and not the kids swing set. Momma didn't raise no dummy.

Freedom of speech and the press often can lead to hurtful words. Quite often people are hurt by insensitive words leveled towards them or about them in the press. While it is legally ok to have freedom of the press or speech, both of those two lead to break up letters by lovers and create despondency and suicide. That is why the press and free speech lead to a false sense of security. Get the point..........

Just proves how stupid newsday is. Some walmarts still sell shotguns. You can walk in and buy 12ga in under 10 minutes. If you want to protect your family,, you get a shotgun not a pistol. Even if you have and armed gang entering your house, the sound of a shotgun loading will make them run. Remember criminals prey on the weak.

Will Newsday ever run a gun related editorial that actually supports the second amendment?

What a bunch of BS. It's a reaction to the shock that citizens in NY actually own firearms. The writers for the commie rag are scared now now. what's next, labeling scoped deer rifles as sniper rifles?

I find the ADT commercials pathetic wherein the burglar breaks through a door and the family huddles in a corner of a room clinching onto the phone begging for help. Is that the alternative to self-defense? Of course we all know the butt of the joke --- If one of the berkeley liberals against possesion of firearms gets burglarized, tied up and their children raped before their eyes while their home is robbed - they'll be NRA members the following morning. It's easy to oppose that which you do not fully understand or have not experienced.

It why police are called Law Enforcement. Police catch the criminals after the crime is committed not before.

It is comforting to know that when the revolutionary mobs go to the homes of liberal newspaper editors to drag them out and hang them, they will meet no armed resistance.

"Guns can provide a false sense of security"...So can wearing gloves while using a saw...So what! The gun discussion gets tiring after a while. Just when you thought these anti-gun people thought of every excuse in the book to separate us from our guns has been used they come up with more really dumb excuses...

Org post, typical NY idiot. Look, and im being serious, I dont believe in giving out guns to anyone, but a background check and you are good to go. I would advise people when they get their first gun to do what I did. Go out back and shoot trash cans, go to a gun range if you live in a city, find a rural country thats easy to get a concealed permit...and by all means, use your gun, 'never bluff'.Most thugs if shot cant go to the police, they are on the warrant list for other crimes. Make sure you never leave finger prints on the shell casings when loading your mag. because when someone robs you and you pop them, you leave DNA as well. Never drop your piece and run. It has a serial #. Learn how to use it. Set yourself, remain calm, and tell the wouldbe robber you dont give warning shots. They understand the language.

One thing my guns do not give me is a False sense of Security." Quite the contrary. They give me a tremendous sense of security. If the editors at Newsday choose not to own handguns that is their choice. My choice is to utilize my right to own guns to it's full potential.

"Guns are used in more than half of all suicides - an average of 46 a day nationally in 2005. And ready availability is key, since suicide is often impulsive, a reaction to a stressful situation such as the breakup of a romance or loss of a job" Once again Newsday fails to do any research. If you think suicide is an "impulisve" act it simply shows you know absolutely nothing about psychiatry's definition of suicide. The road to most suicides is usually a long one with a person's real personality being slowly overcome by a second and false personality that is created by depressive illness, use of alcohol or drug abuse, labeling or other life streeses. I am very surprised at Newsday writing that "suicide is an impulsive act" when the psychiatric community's Definition of Suicide that the real personality is "murdered" by the unreal personality has been around for at least the last 25 years. For as long as I can remember therapists have been attempting to relive families of the guilt associated with a suicide utilizing the proper definition and in one article you mistakenly turned the clock back 25 years and bring "Guilt" right back into the equation.
