Restaurants in New York, California and D.C. and every other city or county have all built outside areas for smokers. Most are on the roof, they have heaters and are usually walled in.

There is no evidence that second hand smoke kills anyone you can go to Forces International for all the science. Smoking bans are being bought by the Pharmacuetical Industry who project sales of over a billion dollars in 2007.

If second hand smoke was as harmful as the anti's claim no one over 60 would be alive. Let's have some common sense folks.

Choice is America, prohibition is not.

Smoking bans will not stop your smoking, they will just help you to remember where you may or may not smoke.

The FALSE reports that get to 'the leaders' are just that: FALSE. They are rigged!

A thriving community is one that has FREE ENTERPRISE and LOW TAXES on all products. FREE CHOICE always wins out!!!

So, what you are saying is that we elect stoopid people who cannot see that a report is false or rigged.
FREE CHOICE: Some 12 year olds are mature enough to buy booze and the laws that prevent them from doing this are made by Nazis designed to put liquor dealers out of business just like they did in Germany.

It's a shame how they are slowly taking away more rights and freedoms. It should be up to the business owner weather he/she wants smoking in their establishment. Make either smoking or non-smoking. No one is forcing emplyeees to work in smoking establishments. If the person is against smoking, don't work there. What I find even worse is when you have to walk by bars and there is all the drunk smokers making noise outside. Why is it that it's OK to pop endless amounts of prozac, zanex{sp?] and the like, but you can't light up a cigarette? We have found some very nice resturants just across the river in PA where you can enjoy a cigarette with an after dinner drink after a wonderful 3 course dinner. Guess PA will enjoy getting the tax revenues from the cig. tax also.

When I showed on other forums that studies show NJ & NY bars are going out of business because of the smoking bans. The answers I got was that the study was paid for by the cagarette companies. Or they just do NOT know how to run a business..

My answer is there was NOTHING to pay for in the study, just send in your financial report for the year.. Cost =$.39 . and as far as not knowing how to run a business most of these businesses have been around for 10-20 years and did just fine without the smoking ban. WTG NJ

What more proof do you need?? but the politicians say clean air is worth the loss. I hope they can say this face to face with all the people out of work because of the smoking ban. Where do they think a 50 year old bar tender is going to find a job in NJ. He is NOT, so I guess we will all have to pay for his unimployment, welfare and doctor bills.
We should see that Sen. John Adler (the bill sponsor) should loose his job. But you know what I am sure the ACS would find him a GREAT job.

If bars are going out of business because of a NJ smoking ban, how do you explain bars that went out of business before the ban was enacted? Similarly, how do you explain bars that thrived after the smoking ban?

(The above 2 questions are along the vein of this question often asked by prosmokers: "How do you explain my grandmother who smoked all of her adult life and lived to 90?")

The truth is, it's impossible to say a business failed because of a smoking ban--there are just too many factors out there that can have an effect on a business.

How do you know it wasn't because of:
1. Embezzlement
2. Competition
3. Employee theft
4. Poor service
5. Poor food quality/weak drinks
6. Inclement weather or other related disaster
7. Customers cutting their discretionary spending
8. People watching their diet/eating at home
9. Misjudgment by owner of demographics
10. New construction blocking or restricting access
11. Lack of well developed business plan
12. Insufficient business experience
13. Poor cash flow management
14. Not pricing meals/drinks properly
15. Failure to prepare for volatility of uncontrollable costs--energy, materials, labor and/or insurance
16. Failure to adapt to a changing market
17. Lawsuit for negligence/safety violation

What prosmokers are spewing is junk accounting/bookkeeping.

Now, let's just say for a moment that the bar's failure ia because of a smoking ban. Well, is it really because of a ban or because the bar's customers decided to bail on the business owner, never to spend another dime for food and drinks, solely because the smoker now has to go outside for 10 minutes to build his nicotine levels back up?

Thanks, smokers, for all your business support after a ban is enacted. We appreciate it.

You say it is impossible to blame the bars going out of business on the NJ smoking ban. There are MANY bars just across the border who within a week after the NJ ban they had almost NO coustomers after being in business for 20-30 years. Most of their smoking coustomers just took a 5 minute ride across the river to PA bars to be able to sit and enjoy a drink and a beer. Now a year after the NJ ban I know of 3 that are GONE. We in PA LOVE NJ and NY. our bars are booming. And while they are here they can buy their cigarettes about Half of what they pay in NY & NJ.

And we do NOT see the smoking ban coming to PA anytime soon since it failed 3 times. every 6 months they keep bringing it back up and it fails even WORSE. Some of the politicians supporting the ban have been voted out. It has become VERY profitable for PA businesses with all the border states going Non smoking. I DARE you to show me ANY bar (no food) in NJ that is more profitable after the smoking ban.

You want to smoke go to you car and kill yourself there.

Of course. Former smokers are some of the worst nannies out there. So what if you quit. Lots of people don't want to, and no one will force us. You can read a sign on the front door, can't you? Than you can act like an adult for two seconds, take some responsibility for yourself, and choose to go to non-smoking bars and restaurants. You have a choice. Don't take away ours.
