She has taken on the illegal gun trade here in New York with an undercover buy-up of Semiautomatic Assault-style Weapons from several large volume Long Island gun stores. With the help of the New York State Police and Lieutenant Joe Demaria who heads up the GIU (Gun Investigation Unit) here on the island, she has helped finance the surreptitious purchasing of illegally converted weapons.
Big gun sellers like Coliseum Gun Traders in Uniondale, Hunter Sports in Massapequa, T&T Gunnery in Seaford, T&T Tactical in New Hyde Park and several other stores are targets for criminal prosecution. They have been importing into New York, clearly marked and equipped Semiautomatic Assault Weapons which are banned under state law from ever being sold to civilians, and using a haphazard assortment of conversion techniques, changing their configuration from illegal to legal. T&T in particular, because of a baseless lawsuit the owner filed against Nassau County, deserves her wrath.
The bottom line is breaking the law for huge profits. A NY illegal version of one model purchased undercover, is sold at wholesale for $690. After a minimal amount of gluing and pinning and no paperwork, that same weapon has assumed the appearance of a legal weapon, and bares the newly revised price tag of $1595. A properly configured rifle manufactured by a reputable weapon manufacturer sells at wholesale for $1200 to $1400. You can see the attraction for skirting state law.
With financial and legal support from Ms. Rice and additional funding from the NYSP, members of the GIU have evidence by the dozens ready for presentation to a Grand Jury. Backed by testimony from the undercover purchasers and a courtroom demonstrations of the flimsy and ineffectual methods employed to maximize profits at the expense of the safety of Long Islanders, Ms. Rice will shut down these purveyors of rapid-fire death.
One such high-volume dealer was witnessed at a “Gun Show” in Hauppauge, openly selling current production “high capacity ammunition feeding devices” that he had sterilized by replacing the "marked" base plates with "blank" ones so that there was no markings indicating origin or date of manufacture. These “hi-cap” magazines wholesale for as little as $4 and they were openly being sold for $25-$30 each. These magazines hold 30-rounds of military-grade ammo, capable of slaughtering innocent men, women and children at a high rate of fire.
I commend the NYSP-GIU for their efforts to clean up our streets of these weapons and going after those who profit from their sale. Plans for undercover visits to several gun ranges where citizens who were duped into buying one of these “converted” weapons, would go target shooting, so that Troopers can inquire as to where the weapons and magazines had been purchased are planned for the fall of this year. If blatant and unethical converted weapons are observed, the owners will be relived of them and possibly arrested. The Nassau District Attorney will use all her powers to prosecute the gun stores who are dealing death by forcing them to defend their conversion methods in court.
