Here we go again. If only Israel would agree to become a "lab experiment" to promote peace and love in the Middle East, all other problems would magically disappear. One need only look back in history over the past 1000 years in the Middle East (slightly longer than Israel's existence), and realize that the hostilities and violence that exist there actually predate the state of Israel.
There are some serious problems in the Middle East that seem to be spinning out of control. It is quite naive and dangerous to Israel to think that by capitulation by Israel will be the magic bullet to commence the peace and healing process. |

RE: Mideast unraveling makes strange allies by BY RAMI G. KHOURI
http://www.newsday.com/news/opinion/ny-opkho0... Dear Newsday, Thrilled to see an Arab voice in your pages, and "Mideast unraveling makes strange allies" by Rami G. Khouri really was an intriguing article, an interesting perspective ...but what a shame that only a Zionist has bothered to respond in your comment section. I think America sending a clear message that we do not think it is a good idea to use tax payers money to fund religion (any religion- even Judaism) would make a huge difference to what is happening in the region right now... and so would a firm condemnation of arming religion (any religion- even Judaism) with lethal weaponry. We should be empowering real freedom with the rule of fair and just laws- real democracy with FULL and EQUAL rights for all. Israel as is is the antithesis of that! And any way I look at it Israel as is is a very bad investment .. a very very bad investment indeed. |

Anne Selden Annab So, Annab, you think Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf States should knock off spending millions of dollars funding schools, Islamic learning centers, and printing textbooks that spew vile hateful Wahabbi messages? Seems like wherever the hateful Sunni Islamic texts go, terrorism follows. London, Madrid, the Philippines, Turkey, Jakarta, Argentina, Bali, Afghanistan, Sudan... to name but a few? So are you urging the Sauds to shut down the hate-filled mosques? Withdraw their Imams from U.S. Prisons? Retract their school books and print books who do not call Jews and Christians and Sufi Muslims 'apes and pigs'? |

Facts on the Ground tell just the opposite of the claim that the US Government is paying Money and other Things as well to the Extremist Sunni Fundamentalist Groups in the MidEast. I don't think that Iran has any significant influence beyond the Shiaa sympathisers around its borders; in Iraq, the Gulf Emirates/States, Syria & Lebanon. As a Sunni Moslem from Egypt, I look at Iran wishing it could achieve its National Ambitions without endangering its own population into unneccesary destructive/preempetive military conflicts with the Oil-Hungery and Seeker of Global Control, the USA.

And any way I look at it Israel as is is a very bad investment .. a very very bad investment indeed. [/QUOTE] Israel belongs to history. It does not require much clairvoyance to see it. In all likelyhood wee are heading towords pre 48 not pre 67.The Jews themselves have brought it on themselves if it happens.By their arrogance. And bullying.Probably that is waht they want. After a breif interlude they can say again "next year in Jerusalem" |

We hear too little in the west of what the people of the Middle East are saying. A welcome voice.
Are these countries unravelling? I am not even sure Iraq will partition yet. So the policies of the west are incorrect in short, medium and long terms. Which policy should change and how, to be less short-sighted? The examples of USA supporting Sunni militants examples are..? ‘It is no surprise that Washington now may be indirectly assisting Sunni fundamentalist radicals of the ilk who attacked the United States in recent years.’? It surprises me. On the other hand, US support has not always been wisely and fairly placed. Consider where the Middle East be without western intervention. The main problem is the Israeli Palestinian conflict. As Ghenny points out, the US appears to simply want to be in control. The west tries to be even handed and are bound to disappoint both sides. We should stop supporting governments in the region, including Israel. We need to recognise that the long term battle is for hearts and minds and use our wealth and example. If they choose war, perhaps we should leave them to it? If a country can attain stability and security, build them a hospital. As long as they do not harbour terrorists, it should not matter if they are Islamic fundamentalists. Disengage. We try to control the region and the cynical ‘know’ it is just for oil. A difficulty for the west, can be leaving people under tyranny like that of Saddam. However, Saddam is gone. What about Iran? Our threatening stance is part of the motor that drives proliferation. We can still act when it can clearly be in our own self interest. Israel? They have had 2/3rds of a century to make peace. They appear to be regressing. Is it equitable for our commitment to be open ended for centuries? |

Politics has never been that Idealistic. Late in my reply, just left some time to see if Facts on the Ground may change. No Change, Iraqis get killed everyday, Fear/Feeling Unsecurity is shared with those who are still alive. A silly/dirty game the Politician stubbornly insisting that it will work. May be after the Iraqi People finish killing every Iraqi on Earth, at then, a New Iraq may show up but with immigrants from Israel to establish a New Annexed Promised Land! |
