If a kid's NHL hero is playing for Sweden, or Canada, or (gasp!) Russia, and so the kid pulls for the Rooskies, or Canada or Norway, is it wrong?

This is a real life question. Not all the kids at 'ol PooPoo's local hockey rink will be screaming USA! USA! Most of the little blasphemers I know will pull for Canada, but there is one with a soft spot in his heart for Russia.(And it's not because of me!)

The world sure is changing!

its understandable, i know as a kid, my american cousins were all huge gretzky fans and admittedly they said there were no true american superstars in the game (not to say there were not good players). But aside from that, they say there is alot of pressure for Canada to take gold on home soil. but Id call it pressure on usa as well as they have not beaten canada in olympic hockey since 1960 (50 longgggggggggg years). an upset today would be epic

You have to expect Canada & Russia to dominate the sport, and for Europe to be strong. In the US kids only play outdoors in the far far north. Indoor hockey is very expensive, and most those fairly affluent kids have other sports competing for attention, other activities to fill their time, and of course academics.

It's gotten better in the US for hockey, but still it's only one sport among many, which many kids don't have access to for different reasons. That said, it's a new day in the United States of America when a kid can root for his hero's Russian Olympic team without giving it a second thought. Or pull for the Canadians.

MSNBC at 7 EST. The game is undeway now, but NBC is delaying it for some reason. Maybe a good prison reality show?

Oh well, NBC is losing over $200 million on these Games, so at least karma is working well...

The rule is, you have to want the USA to win first. No ifs, ands or buts.

If they're out already or not playing, go ahead and support your idol.

There is something fundamentally wrong with the parents of a kid who wants another country to beat or finish ahead of America in the Olympics.

"no ifs and or buts", lol . There is something fundamentally wrong with anyone who says you can't cheer for another country. thats bizarre. Kids will often go for their hero i.e. foreigners cheering the Basketball dream team. Pull the flag out of your @ss and relax. its a game, not a war. As an american living near Torontoi am going for Canada for the simple fact that i don't wanna be mobbed.

I cheer for another country all the time.

I married a foreigner.

Of course you can cheer for anyone you want. But wanting America to lose so another country can get gold? Unless you know actually know the person, that's pathetic.

I'm inclined to agree, and this isn't most kids at the rink. I'm just struck that there are kids who so identify with their favorite players they will root for that player's national team. This was unthinkable when I was a kid, but then NHL players came from Canada and didn't play in the Olympics.

In Chicago, 6 Blackhawks are Olympians, but only 1 plays for the US. The other 5 are scattered on 4 teams. Most the "blasphemers" like Canada because the Blackhawks' team captain is Canadian and very popular. The kid who likes Russia really likes a Russian who plays for Washington; I can't even remember the player's name.(And almost all these kids are Chicago fans, but they hope Jonathan Towes wins the gold...for Canada!)

I talk a lot about how times are changing. This is one change I don't like. Yet it's probably to be expected if we're fans of teams who recruit talent from around the globe.

Team USA got it done against Canada! And all is well with the world...

BTW, the 5 Blackhawks are on only 3 teams; 3 play for Canada, 2 for Slovakia. Only one plays for the US, so only one will win the gold!

FWIW

Hank Lundqvist is my favorite player.

But if the US play Sweden I want Drury to score the winner in a 1-0 US win.

Sorry Hank.

Just a friendly observation. Your math is incorrect. 3, 2, and 1 would equal six not five.
