Throughout Olympic history, people have lost gold and were clearly not happy about it, but I've never seen such a suicidal/homicidal-looking group. I do concede that hockey is a little different than, say, cross-country skiing, because you go into the final game KNOWING you're going to get at least silver, so the disappointment of not getting gold has to be worse. Anyway, a minor point--the expression on Ryan Miller's face was hardly the most important part of one of the best Olympic hockey games I've ever seen. What disappoints me more is the jingoistic bitterness of some of the US fans on this thread. You can't admire the accomplishments of the US team without despising the country that is probably our closest ally? It's a little pathetic. there's a big difference between competing in an olympic event as an individual and taking silver and losing a championship game against another team. What you are thinking about is the tradition of a pool of athletes competing against each other to cross a finish line or win more points. sure you get silver or bronze and you're happy you medaled. The downhill skiers are good example. they're cheering that they got silver in most cases. In an organized team sport like hockey or soccer its way different than running a race or diving etc. you battle your opponents all game long and it's physically and emotionally draining to lose... especially to lose the end game in a tournament. I've been there, not at that level (lol) but even in regional and local tournaments the sting of the loss is hard to describe. Anyone who has competed in a team sport knows what I'm talking about. we saw it on the faces of our hockey team last weekend. I know the look and don't fault them at all. They're just being honestly disappointed. Suicidal sounds funny in an internet forum but it does a disservice to those great athletes who gave their all for 60+ minutes. Anything less than the down, exhausted, depleted, angry, depressed looks on their face would have totally surprised me and anyone else who has competed in and lost a close final game in tournament be it the olympics or just a local league. It's the agony of defeat times 10 dude.

feces for jesus wrote: <quoted text> How can you not mope being 1 goal away from gold? The team 100% believed they had what it takes to win gold. Losing the game in OT doesn't help.. It's not as if they won the last game they played to take home a medal like Finland did. You really expect Miller to have a wide grin after giving up the game winner in OT? Pull the plug psycho!

If you're nearby - FYI. Otherwise it's on TSN tonight. I hear Toews is bringing Stanley with him as well.
