I despise officer Buccilli- he has nothing better to do than to harass OP high school kids, happened to me when i went there 8 years ago- and to see it's still happening. If every prom party w/ underage drinking made the news- the news would have to run 24-7 for the month of June. They shouldn't have had it right in the village of OP-drew too much attention.

Typical is it better to have a supervised party or just have the kids hiding in the woods drinking unsupervised. I am not condoning the purchase of alcohol for minors for a party but it is time this country woke up and realized the drinking age of 21 is a joke. I you don’t think your high school child is attending drinking parties then you’re just not living in reality. Its time to change our way of thinking here and begin with a realistic drinking age of 19 with supervision on college campuses and strong educational programs about drinking and driving, and if supervised driving problems may even drop at younger ages

I don't care if Gurtler is some supposed local media celebrity, a minor one at that since I have never heard of him. Serving alcohol to minors, throw him in jail!!!!!!!!!

The adults should be fined $10,000 each, that might make them smart a bit.

As much as I would like to say its OK since he was keeping an eye on them, I cant. What about after they left the party? How were they going to get home? Were they driving themselves? If that's the case, that is irresponsible and unforgivable; that a parent would let someone else's child drink and drive! But if they were all camping out, I don't see the harm in it. I have taken my step-son with us camping (he will be 20 soon) and given him a few beers around the fire as well as at home on a few occasions, and I am glad I knew that at least for that night he was at home and supervised instead of drinking & driving or worse!

Why do these parents think they have to be so popular with their kids and their kids friends. Try being parents for a change. You don't need to be your child's best friend in order for them to love you.

Doesn't matter...sports figure in Buffalo...he'll get away with it. Ask Marshawn Lynch and his poor excuse for a human being of a lawyer.

First of all, residence is spelled wrong in the article! Sorry, teacher here... Why in the world, in this day and age, would adults place themselves in this position? All I have to say is they are just plain stupid! My guess is that he thought he would get off because of his "celebrity". Idiot! I hope they throw the book at him!

Molly,
The difference is this...YOU are in charge of YOUR child NOT a number of other people's children. The problem with it is IT'S ILLEGAL! It doesn't matter if they are driving or not...

Here is a parent steeped in reality. Come on people, we all drank on prom night. Here is someone that accepted the reality of it and chose to supervise, what his and other kids would have been doing anyway, in addition to offering a ride home. I would hope that my kids would have been wise enough to be there. get off the soapbox parents, you should have been doing the same thing. Go John and Mary

Supervised party? There is no such thing....as soon as these kids get a hold of alcohol especially 70 or more kids....anything in the world can happen and does. And just because they live in Orchard Park they are certainly not immune from these kinds of things because it is considered an upscale community. I have serious concerns about the choices these parents have made. Kids are going to get alcohol some way or another but these parents like these are just making it easier for them. How do you control 70 teenagers in any situation let alone after they have been drinking? I have raised two teenagers myself and have heard and seen just about everything. Wake up people...our teens need our help. I hope these parents are held accountable, the kids seem to be the only ones who take the rap. I am just glad that none of these kids got behind the wheel and died that night or had killed some innocent victim..how would they have lived with themselves then?????

No "Fellow Orchard Parker", we did not ALL drink on prom night. Just because some do it does not mean that it is acceptable. I seriously doubt that he intended to drive 70-80 teenagers home in the early morning hours on Sunday. Unlike you, I would hope that my kids would be wise enough to be at the parent sponsored drug and alcohol free post prom party held less than a mile away from the Gurtler's house. These lousy role models shall serve as an example of what happens to parents who forget that they are just that....a parent.

After speaking with a parent of a student in attendance I feel it necessary to respond. When he went to pick up his child, which he knew he would be doing, he witnessed 40-45 students in front of house and 0 yes zero!!!!!!!!!! cars. In other words the kids were not planning on drinking and driving. When I went to school the thought of 40-45 kids attending a post prom party, drinking was expected out of most, so was driving. Heads up to the students for having enough common sense to plan on not drinking and driving

15 years ago my wife and I hosted post prom/pool party for our twins. We solicited the other parents and raised $250.00 in cash. This was going to be the raffle money we gave away the morning after the party. We got 8 sets of parents to chaparone. Two of the Dads sat in the driveway all night watching the front of the house. The rest of the parents watched the pool and the backyard. Here were the rules: No booze allowed (including the parents) if someone wanted to go home a chaparone had to drive them, no one was allowed in after the party started. The kids had a great time swimming aned playing volleyball in the pool. We found a couple of party poopers sleeping on the couch and floor but at least they were sober and safe. In the morning we cooked a big buffet breakfast and raffled off the money. Everyone was grateful (especially the parents). We started a trend and it continues in our community.

Kids want to party on prom night, nothing will ever stop that. I applaud and thank John Gurtler, Jr. for having a safe location for them where no one could drive home drunk. This ticks me off because the cops harass Gurtler for providing a safe location for teens that would probably end partying someplace else and maybe even driving home drunk.
Marshawn Lynch hit-and-runs someone while drunk and they basically left him alone since then. Gurtler does something good in my eyes and gets publicly scrutinized.

I cannot believe all the attention this is getting. In the cutthroat business of media advertising, the TV outlets are piling on an employee of a radio outlet who is good at his job of selling advertising.......pretty shameful and typical small town stuff.

I agree with you, kids want to party. There are other things to consider besides a DWI (i.e., alcohol poisoning, falling and breaking your head open on a toilet or bathtub, fighting, sexual aggressiveness). Alcohol, inexperience and youth are a deadly combination with the parents/family paying the price.
