A seemingly innocuous visit from Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick caused such a backlash for a Toyota dealership in Henderson, Nev., that it was forced to shut down the promotional page on its website.


Vick, who was convicted of dogfighting charges in 2007, was in town for a youth football camp and stopped by the dealership to sign autographs and meet with fans Friday night, the Las Vegas Sun reported Saturday.

But after the dealership posted pictures of Vick's appearance on its website, angry comments started flying in.

One commenter described Vick as a "dog killer," while another threatened to beat him up.

Others said they would boycott the dealership for sponsoring Vick for promotional and charity events.

The dealership was initially just deleting comments but eventually had to shut down the page.

"We're just trying to do something right for the kids and people just forget about that," said Stephanie Bernas, marketing manager and social media director for the dealership.

It was a divisive move when the Eagles signed Michael Vick nearly three years ago, but since that time the controversy has, to an extent, subsided in Philadelphia.

The same can’t be said for the rest of the country.

Vick is in Las Vegas this weekend for a youth football camp and appeared at Findlay Toyota car dealership in nearby Henderson, Nev., to kick off the event. But the dealership had to shut down its promotional Facebook page after a rush of negative comments about Vick, the Las Vegas Sun reports.

Several commenters took shots at Vick, calling him a “dog killer” and even threatened physical harm to him if he showed up at the event. The dealership attempted to moderate the comments at first, but ultimately decided to shut down the page.

While Vick recognized that many people haven’t forgiven him for his misdeeds, he also spoke of others who have “grown to forgive [him] and give [him] a second chance.”

This is the second year Vick has participated in the charity, which includes several other NFL players and hosts high school-aged players.
